First and second sound in a two-dimensional dilute Bose gas across the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition

open access: yes, 2014
We theoretically investigate first and second sound of a two-dimensional (2D) atomic Bose gas in harmonic traps by solving Landau's two-fluid hydrodynamic equations.

miMic: The microphone as a pencil [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
miMic, a sonic analogue of paper and pencil is proposed: An augmented microphone for vocal and gestural sonic sketching. Vocalizations are classified and interpreted as instances of sound models, which the user can play with by vocal and gestural control.

Sound Hole Sound

open access: yes, 2015
The volume of air that goes in and out of a musical instrument's sound hole is related to the sound hole's contribution to the volume of the sound. Helmholtz's result for the simplest case of steady flow through an elliptical hole is reviewed. Measurements on multiple holes in sound box geometries and scales relevant to real musical instruments ...

Microstructural Evolution and Mechanical Performance of Plasma‐Assisted Hybrid Friction Stir Welded Dissimilar Aluminum–Copper Joints

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Plasma‐assisted hybrid friction stir welding of dissimilar AlCu joints employs localized plasma preheating to balance heat input and enhance plastic flow. The optimized process reduces axial force by up to 35%, refines the microstructure, and achieves ≈96% joint efficiency.

Phytochrome E Plays a Role in the Suppression of Germination in Far‐Red Light in Tomato

open access: yesPlant Direct
As photoautotrophs, plants use light not only as a source of energy but also as cues for directing growth and development. Phytochromes comprise a small gene family of plant specific light receptors that absorb mostly in the red/far‐red portion of the ...

Sound shield [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
An improved test section for a supersonic or hypersonic wind tunnel is disclosed wherein the model tested is shielded from the noise normally radiated by the turbulent tunnel wall boundary layer.

Intramolecular Down‐ and Up‐Conversion in Dimeric Tetracene Complexes Centered via Platinum(II) and Palladium(II)

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Metal‐tetracene dimeric complexes are synthesized through the pyridyl coordination to either Pt(II) or Pd(II). Photophysical properties are systematically compared as a function of the metal using steady‐state and time‐resolved spectroscopy. The Pt(II) dimer exhibits efficient intramolecular singlet fission and subsequent intramolecular up‐conversion ...

Growth hormone secretagogue receptor‐1a mediates ghrelin's effects on attenuating tumour‐induced loss of muscle strength but not muscle mass

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, 2021
Background Ghrelin may ameliorate cancer cachexia (CC) by preventing anorexia, muscle, and fat loss. However, the mechanisms mediating these effects are not fully understood. This study characterizes the pathways involved in muscle mass and strength loss
