Race-relevant cues influence the processing of linguistic variation: Evidence from African American English and Mainstream American English

open access: yesPsychology of Language and Communication
Race-relevant cues, whether vocal or visual, shape how listeners process the incoming speech signal. In order to better understand how these cues inform sentence-level processing, we asked listeners to rate the plausibility of three different sentence ...

From Shear to Sound: Mechanics–Acoustics Mapping of TPMS Lattices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattices are mapped across mechanical and acoustic performance, revealing that descriptors validated in compression fail under shear. First‐time comparison with trusses included. A transition from porous to resonance‐driven absorption emerges at 25% density.

The Sound of Health [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2014
THE SILENCE OF HEALTH “Health is life lived in the silence of the organs” wrote the French surgeon Rene Leriche in 1936, a concept later adopted and further developed by the physician and philosopher Georges Canguilhem (1). Albeit certainly resonant with the experience of health defined as the state of well being perceived by an individual, this ...

Unlocking Multi‐Valley Energy Pockets and Interface‐Induced Phonon Filtering in InSb Thermoelectrics by Reaction‐Driven Interface Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
InSb, a narrow‐bandgap semiconductor with high carrier mobility, is promising for thermoelectric energy conversion but suffers from high lattice thermal conductivity and strong bipolar conduction. Here, in situ interface engineering using Co2O3 nanoprecursors forms hierarchical CoSbx/In2O3/CoSb3 heterostructures that enhance phonon scattering and ...

A Mouse Model of Beta-Cell Dysfunction as Seen in Human Type 2 Diabetes

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Research, 2018
Loss of first-phase insulin release is an early pathogenic feature of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Various mouse models exist to study T2D; however, few recapitulate the early β-cell defects seen in humans.

Introducing an electronic tracking tool into daily multidisciplinary discharge rounds on a medicine service: a quality improvement project to reduce length of stay

open access: yesBMJ Open Quality, 2018
Background Inefficient coordination of care around discharge can increase length of stay, lead to ineffective transitions and contribute an unnecessary cost burden to patients and hospital systems.
