The emerging field of sound training

IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine, 1999
Sound stimulation impacts 20th century human life in myriad ways, from sonic booms to the high-quality technological capture and delivery of music and voice through a variety of media. This article describes the emerging field of "Sound Training", which is a newly proposed name that encompasses the current and evolving sound-based technologies and ...

Transcranial Sound Field Characterization

Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology, 2008
In the scope of therapeutic ultrasound applications in the adult brain, such as sonothrombolysis in stroke, a better understanding of the intracranial acoustic properties during insonation through the temporal bone is warranted. Innovative ultrasound imaging techniques, like transcranial duplex sonography, may open new avenues to apply ultrasound for ...

Sounding the field: recent works in sound studies

The British Journal for the History of Science, 2015
For sound studies, the publication of a 593-page handbook, not to mention the establishment of at least one society – the European Sound Studies Association – might seem to signify the emergence of a new academic discipline. Certainly, the books under consideration here, alongside many others, testify to an intensification of concern with the aural ...

The diffuse sound field in energetic analysis

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2012
Measuring the degree of diffuseness of a sound field is crucial in many modern parametric spatial audio techniques. In these applications, intensity-based diffuseness estimators are particularly convenient, as the sound intensity can also be used to obtain, e.g., the direction of arrival of the sound.

THE SOUND FIELD OF A PISTON SOURCE

Canadian Journal of Physics, 1953
An exact solution is presented for the sound field between two infinite walls when the source is a piston in one of the walls. A method is also outlined for the case of a source having any amplitude distribution which is a function only of radial distance from the center of the source.

Automatic sound field correcting system and a sound field correcting method

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2006
A filter coefficient of a graphic equalizer GEQ is corrected based on detection results of reproduced sounds generated by supplying a noise to all frequency band loudspeakers 6 FL to 6 RR and a low frequency band exclusively reproducing loudspeaker 6 WF via the graphic equalizer GEQ.

Sound-Field Amplification

Communication Disorders Quarterly, 2003
In this clinical exchange, the authors discuss acoustic accessibility and sound-field amplification in general education classrooms. They bridge theory to practice by presenting preliminary information from two different school systems demonstrating how an improved signal-to-noise ratio can have a positive impact on special education referrals.

Detecting Sound Fields

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1959
A feedback method is described, permitting a loudspeaker to be driven automatically so that the sound pressure generated at any one point is constant with frequency, independent of the loudspeaker characteristics. Several applications illustrate the success of the method in the calibration of microphones and in the study of diffraction and reflection ...

Sound Field Reproduction

2008
Multichannel sound field reproduction aims at the physically correct synthesis of acoustical wave fields with a large number of loudspeakers. It goes beyond stereophony by extending or eliminating the so-called sweet spot. This chapter presents the physical and mathematical description of various methods for this purpose and presents the physical and ...
