The Palaeogene of the Southern Alpine area of NW Italy encompasses parts of the Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto Regions. At the beginning of the Cenozoic, this area was subdivided into two basins which are roughly separated by the present-day north–south alignment of the Brenta River.

In the tectonic framework of the Carnic Alps the metamorphic overprint from the lower anchizone up to the epizone is exposed in a continuous NS-trending metamorphic section.

'Black' soils in the southern Alps

Many soils in southern Switzerland have a black color, contain a large amount of soil organic matter (SOM) and seem to have some andic properties although they did not develop on volcanic parent material.
