The Role of Eddies in the Southern Ocean Temperature Response to the Southern Annular Mode [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2009
Abstract The role of eddies in modulating the Southern Ocean response to the southern annular mode (SAM) is examined, using an ocean model run at multiple resolutions from coarse to eddy resolving. The high-resolution versions of the model show an increase in eddy kinetic energy that peaks 2–3 yr after a positive anomaly in the SAM index.

Annular modes and apparent eddy feedbacks in the Southern Hemisphere [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
AbstractLagged correlation analysis is often used to infer intraseasonal dynamical effects but is known to be affected by nonstationarity. We highlight a pronounced quasi 2 year peak in the anomalous zonal wind and eddy momentum flux convergence power spectra in the Southern Hemisphere, which is prima facie evidence for nonstationarity.

Quantifying the variability of the annular modes: reanalysis uncertainty vs. sampling uncertainty [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2018
The annular modes characterize the dominant variability of the extratropical circulation in each hemisphere, quantifying vacillations in the position of the tropospheric jet streams and the strength of the stratospheric polar vortices.

Evolution of the eastward shift in the quasi-stationary minimum of the Antarctic total ozone column [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2017
The quasi-stationary pattern of the Antarctic total ozone has changed during the last 4 decades, showing an eastward shift in the zonal ozone minimum. In this work, the association between the longitudinal shift of the zonal ozone minimum and changes in ...

Impact of the Southern Annular Mode on Southern Ocean circulation and biology [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2005
We investigate the impact of the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) on surface wind, sea surface temperature (SST), and surface chlorophyll concentration on intraseasonal to interannual timescales in the Southern Ocean using 8‐day average satellite observations. Positive phases of the SAM are associated with enhanced westerly winds over the Antarctic Zone (AZ)

Climatic modulation of surface acidification rates through summertime wind forcing in the Southern Ocean

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
The Southern Annular Mode is a dominant climate variability mode in the Southern Ocean. Using observational data, the authors show a strong climatic modulation of ocean acidification via Southern Annular Mode -related winds.

Recent Multi‐Decadal Southern Ocean Surface Cooling Unlikely Caused by Southern Annular Mode Trends

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
Over recent decades, the Southern Ocean (SO) has experienced multi‐decadal surface cooling despite global warming. Earlier studies have proposed that recent SO cooling has been caused by the strengthening of surface westerlies associated with a positive ...

Impact of the Latitude of Stratospheric Aerosol Injection on the Southern Annular Mode

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2022
Abstract The impacts of Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI) strategies on the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) are analyzed with the Community Earth System Model. Using a set of simulations with fixed single‐point SO 2 injections we demonstrate the first‐order dependence of the

Multimodel Analysis of the Atmospheric Response to Antarctic Sea Ice Loss at Quadrupled CO2

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2019
Antarctic sea ice cover is projected to significantly decrease by the end of the twenty‐first century if greenhouse gas concentrations continue to rise, with potential consequences for Southern Hemisphere weather and climate.
