Although HPAI A(H5N1) virus detections were predominant in western and southwestern Europe, they also occurred on the northernmost coast of Norway. More than

Assessment of a Social Media‐Based Method for Determining Raptor Diet

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 6, June 2025.
This study mined social media as a citizen science method to reduce the time burden and biases associated with recording accurate diet information for predators. In total, 1985 prey observations were recorded of two Australian coastal raptors and were used to produce diet profiles that were compared by region, social media platform, and against other ...

Spatial responses of black vultures to resource pulses during white‐tailed deer hunting seasons

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 49, Issue 2, June 2025.
Pulsed resources can dramatically influence spatial ecology of wildlife. We investigated black vulture responses to resource pulses from white‐tailed deer hunting season. We found that black vulture home range size and overlap decreased with harvest intensity. Abstract Pulsed resources can dramatically influence spatial ecology of wildlife.

Under the radar: The availability of nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs in South America and implications for avian scavenger populations

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 7, Issue 4, April 2025.
The use of diclofenac and other nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has been identified as a cause of vulture decline in Asia and Europe. Investigation into the availability of two NSAIDs (diclofenac and flunixin) in South America found that both are approved for veterinary use and are accessible in all countries searched, across many ...

Anthropogenic nesting substrates increase parental fitness in a Neotropical songbird, the pale‐breasted thrush Turdus leucomelas

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology, Volume 2025, Issue 1, January 2025.
The failure of breeding attempts is a major hindrance to bird reproduction, making nest site choice under strong selective pressure. Urbanization may offer lower risk of nest predation to certain bird species, but the impact of using anthropogenic structures as nesting sites on parental fitness is seldom studied.

Double brooding and offspring desertion in the barn owl (Tyto alba) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Many bird species produce two annual broods during a single breeding season. However, not all individuals reproduce twice in the same year suggesting that double brooding is condition-dependent.
