Changes in Holocene climate and the intensity of Southern Hemisphere Westerly Winds based on a high-resolution palynological record from sub-Antarctic South Georgia [PDF]

open access: yesHolocene, 2015
Sub-Antarctic South Georgia is a key region for studying climate variability in the Southern Hemisphere, because of its position at the core of the Southern Hemisphere Westerly Wind belt and between the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and the Polar Frontal

Atmospheric halocarbons in the southern Hemisphere

Atmospheric Environment (1967), 1978
Abstract This paper reports atmospheric CCl3F, CCl4 and CH3CCl3 concentration measurements obtained during 12 months of aircraft sampling and 6 months of surface measurements in Australia. These are preliminary results of a continuing programme aimed at describing the Southern Hemisphere atmospheric content of these gases and their variation in space

Mania and seasonality in the southern hemisphere

Journal of Affective Disorders, 1991
Admissions for mania over a 9-year period in New Zealand were analysed, including data from four separate regions spanning nine degrees in latitude. A spring/summer peak of admissions for mania was found. The four regions showed marked, unexpected variability in seasonality.

The significance of PCBs in the atmosphere of the southern hemisphere

Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2001
Air monitoring stations were set up at 2 sites in the southern hemisphere--Moody Brook, Falkland Island (51 degrees 25' S, 57 degrees 56' W) and Halley, Research Station, Antarctica (75 degrees 35' S, 26 degrees 30' W). PCBs were monitored at the stations throughout 1999. Highest concentrations were observed when temperatures were greater.

Trial Balloons in the Southern Hemisphere

Science, 1967
Superpressure GHOST balloons are being launched from Christchurch, New Zealand, to determine their life, stability, and clustering characteristics at several altitudes. Three separate balloons have flown for more than 6 months at 200 millibars, proving capability of the long life that had been hoped for at such middle altitudes and providing ...

Transfer of Northern Hemisphere Fall-out to the Southern Hemisphere

Nature, 1966
THE detonation of a low-yield nuclear device in Western China at 1900 h, October 16, 1964 (New Zealand time), was reported, and tests for barium-140 were included in our routine investigations of fall-out at Gracefield, Wellington (41° 14′ S., 174° 55′ E.), to identify debris from this test.

Blocking in the Southern Hemisphere

Monthly Weather Review, 1985
Abstract The focus of this Paper is on the frequency and spatial distributions of blocking and persistent anomalies of geopotential height over the Southern Hemisphere. The analysis is based upon daily height fields at 1000 and 500 mb for both summer and winter. Histogram frequency distributions of height anomalies and maps of the skewness and kurtosis
