Decadal Changes in Wintertime Frequency of Stratospheric Northern Annular Mode Events With Downward Propagation

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract The surface climate impact of stratospheric polar vortex anomalies depends on their downward propagation (DP) into the troposphere. We find pronounced decadal variability in the winter frequency of stratospheric Northern Annular Mode (SNAM) events that exhibit DP (1951–2024).

Mesoscale Eddy Currents Reshape the Spatial Distribution of Wave Height in the Southern Ocean

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract Mesoscale eddy currents influence ocean surface waves, but their imprints on wave height remain poorly described by observations. Here, we examine significant wave height (SWH) variations associated with more than 42,000 mesoscale eddies in the Southern Ocean using along‐track Jason‐3 altimeter measurements.

Precursors of Marine Heatwaves in the Eastern Mediterranean

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract Re‐analysis and observational data are used to identify the relationship between marine heatwaves and atmospheric heatwaves over the Eastern Mediterranean, and also the precursors of marine heatwaves in the 15‐day before heatwave onset. There has been a clear tendency for more heat extremes in recent years.

Pacific Decadal Oscillation Modulates an Interdecadal Trans‐Pacific Dry‐Wet Seesaw in East Asian and North American Semi‐Arid Regions

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract Semi‐arid regions are expanding globally through divergent pathways: in East Asia (EA) via drying of semi‐humid lands, while in North America (NA) through wetting of arid areas. This interdecadal dry‐wet reversal across the Pacific has remained mechanistically unclear.
