Sow longevity: phenotypic time trends, the effect of litter size, and economic values

open access: yesFrontiers in Animal Science
We analyzed data of 371,343 PIC-Camborough® parent sows housed in 329 commercial farms across the world. From sow birthyear 2000 to 2024, litter size (total number born, TNB) steadily increased each year by 0.16 piglets per litter.

Breeding replacement gilts for organic pig herds*

open access: yesAnimal, 2011
In this study, breeding structures and commercial sow lines were evaluated by economic and genetic simulation studies for their suitability to provide the Dutch organic pig sector with replacement gilts.

Closed‐Loop Radiative Cooling Mulch Upcycled From Agricultural Residues for Efficient Soil Heat–Water Stress Mitigation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Conventional passive radiative cooling films rely on costly feedstocks and energy‐intensive fabrication, with poor end‐of‐life compatibility in agriculture. To address this challenge, a sustainable radiative cooling mulch (SRCM) is developed from waste maize leaves via spontaneous hydrogen‐bond self‐assembly.

Competing risk analyses of longevity in Duroc sows with a special emphasis on leg conformation

open access: yesAnimal, 2009
A competing risk approach was used to evaluate the influence of several factors on culling risk for 587 Duroc sows. Three different analyses were performed according to whether sow failure was due to death during productive life (DE) or to one of two ...

Splenic Hamartoblastoma in a Sow.

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Medical Science, 1994
Multiple lesions of splenic hamartoblastoma were found incidentally in a 2- to 3-year-old crossbred sow. The predominant cells, characterized by extreme nuclear irregularity and hemidesmosome-like structures, were considered to be derived from reticular cells of the spleen, and demonstrated infiltrative growth.

A Conserved DT2‐bZIP66‐NF‐YC4 Regulatory Module Confers Drought Tolerance in Rice and Arabidopsis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study identifies a conserved tripartiteDT2–bZIP66–NF‐YC4 transcriptional module that enhances rice drought tolerance by activating stress‐responsive genes. This regulatory complex is functionally conserved across cereals and Arabidopsis, providing promising targets for engineering drought‐resilient crops. ABSTRACT Drought stress severely restricts

Sow dimensions and loose-housed farrowing pen sizes on commercial piglet-producing farms in Sweden

open access: yesActa Veterinaria Scandinavica
International interest in loose-housed farrowing is growing and there are ongoing discussions within the European Union (EU) on new legal requirements. However, there is a lack of empirical data on loose-housed farrowing pen sizes and sow dimensions in ...

Correcting Apparent Priming Bias Unveils Fertilizer Nitrogen‐Risk Archetypes of Surplus and Depletion Across Asian Rice Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Correcting the apparent priming effect resolves systematic biases in Asian rice fertilizer nitrogen accounting. Net soil retention drops below 7%, while 48% of fertilizer escapes, inflicting US$98.53 billion in annual reactive‐nitrogen damages. High‐resolution mapping uncovers N‐risk archetypes across 42% of the rice area, delivering a spatially ...

A Mutation Losing an RBP‐Binding Site in the LncRNA NORSF Transcript Influences Granulosa Cell Apoptosis and Sow Fertility

open access: yesAdvanced Science
Sow fertility is an economically important quantitative trait. Hundreds of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) containing tens of thousands of potential candidate genes are excavated. However, among these genes, non‐coding RNAs including long non‐coding RNAs (

Heritability of shoulder ulcers and genetic correlations with mean piglet weight and sow body condition

open access: yesAnimal, 2012
The objective of this paper was to estimate the heritability for shoulder ulcers and the genetic correlations between shoulder ulcers, mean piglet weight and sow body condition.
