Oxidative stress status and reproductive performance of sows during gestation and lactation under different thermal environments

open access: yesAsian-Australasian Journal of Animal Sciences, 2019
Objective Two experiments were conducted using 28 healthy multiparous sows to evaluate the oxidative stress status and reproductive performance of sows during gestation and lactation under different thermal environments. Methods Fourteen multiparous sows

Abortion in Sows [PDF]

open access: yesActa Veterinaria Scandinavica, 1970
Of a total of 31,766 pregnancies 465 abortions were reported, in average 1.46 %. By comparison of the frequency of abortion at different times of the year a significantly higher percentage of abortion was found in sows inseminated during the summer months. No significant difference was found between 68 boars as to the frequency of abortion.

Consequences of negative energy balance on follicular development and oocyte quality in primiparous sows

open access: yesBiology of Reproduction, 2019
Metabolic demands of modern hybrid sows have increased over the years, which increases the chance that sows enter a substantial negative energy balance (NEB) during lactation. This NEB can influence the development of follicles and oocytes that will give

Offspring subcutaneous adipose markers are sensitive to the timing of maternal gestational weight gain [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
peer-reviewedBackground Excessive maternal weight gain during pregnancy impacts on offspring health. This study focused on the timing of maternal gestational weight gain, using a porcine model with mothers of normal pre-pregnancy weight.

Factors associated with the productive longevity of sows in commercial breeding herds [PDF]

open access: yesArchives Animal Breeding
Maximizing sows' productive longevity (PL) represents a significant challenge faced by the swine industry, as the growing increase in the removal rate of sows, mainly young sows, directly impacts the system's economy.

Intrauterine growth retarded progeny of pregnant sows fed high protein:low carbohydrate diet is related to metabolic energy deficit. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
High and low protein diets fed to pregnant adolescent sows led to intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR). To explore underlying mechanisms, sow plasma metabolite and hormone concentrations were analyzed during different pregnancy stages and correlated ...

Post-parturient Disorders and Backfat Loss in Tropical Sows in Relation to Backfat Thickness before Farrowing and Postpartum Intravenous Supportive Treatment [PDF]

open access: yesAsian-Australasian Journal of Animal Sciences, 2013
The aim of the present study was to determine the evidence of post-parturient disorders and backfat loss during lactation in sows raised in tropical areas in relation to their backfat thickness before farrowing and postpartum intravenous supportive ...

Dietary supplementation with yeast hydrolysate in pregnancy influences colostrum yield and gut microbiota of sows and piglets after birth

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Dietary supplementation with yeast derivatives (YD) contributes to the health and physiology of sows and piglets, but few studies have focused on how it influences gut health and performance of sows and piglets.
