Nonlinearities in space-division multiplexed transmission

Optical Fiber Communication Conference/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference 2013, 2013
We discuss the modeling of nonlinear propagation in multi-mode optical fibers. We show that nonlinear propagation in the presence of random mode coupling is described by coupled multi-component Manakov equations. The system implications of these equations on communications performance and information capacity are discussed.

SPACE-DIVISION MULTIPLEXED TRANSMISSION

Optical Fiber Communication Conference/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference 2013, 2013
Space-division multiplexing allows scaling the per-fiber capacity beyond the nonlinear Shannon limit of legacy single-mode fibers. We review enabling technologies with a focus on SDM transmission systems enabled by multiple-input multiple-output digital signal processing.

Components For Space-Division Multiplexing

2017 European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC), 2017
Amplifiers, spatial multiplexers, and routing elements that exploit spatial integration will reduce costs and complexity of future space-division multiplexed transmission systems. Managing spatial modes requires new components such as mode multiplexers, mixers, equalizers, and unscramblers.

Nonlinear Propagation in Fibers for Space Division Multiplexing

Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics, 2017
We review the modeling of nonlinear propagation in fibers for Space Division Multiplexing (SDM), and discuss the impact of mode coupling and modal dispersion on the nonlinear interference between WDM channels of an SDM systems. We present an analytic model that is suitable for the efficient computation of the nonlinear interference noise power.

Degree of Coherence in Space-Division Multiplexed Transmission

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2014
We generalize the concept of degree of polarization of single-mode fields to multi-mode fields by introducing a new parameter that we define degree of mutual coherence. The new definition enables characterizing by a single parameter the quality of the signal corrupted by various linear and nonlinear impairments at the output of an optical transmission ...

Modeling of Nonlinear Distortion in Space-Division Multiplexing

2023 Optical Fiber Communications Conference and Exhibition (OFC), 2023
We review the main models of space-division multiplexing transmissions in fiber optics working in the nonlinear regime, including perturbative modeling, the ergodic Gaussian noise model, and their implications on system analysis.

Space division multiplexing algorithms

2000 10th Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference. Information Technology and Electrotechnology for the Mediterranean Countries. Proceedings. MeleCon 2000 (Cat. No.00CH37099), 2005
The main goals in developing new wireless communication systems are increasing the transmission capacity and improving the spectrum efficiency. In this paper, spectrum efficiency and capacity improving techniques, captured under the name space division multiplexing (SDM), are proposed.

Few-Mode Fibers for Space Division Multiplexing

Optical Fiber Communication Conference, 2016
Mode Division Multiplexing: potential high number of usable spatial modes and strong mode overlapping (high spatial density and efficient pumping for amplification) FMFs for WEAKLY-COUPLED MDM 4-LP-mode Fibers have been reported, 7-LP-mode Fibers (capacity increase of a factor of 12) seem feasible Main limitations are Aeff, Attenuation and XT: new ...
