Noncoherent space-time block coded modulation

Unitary space-time modulation is well tailored for flat fading channels where the noncoherent receiver is used. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme of unitary space-time modulation, called noncoherent space-time block coded modulation, by using the set partitioning of signal sets and multilevel coding.

A rate-6/4 full-diversity orthogonal space-time block code (STBC) is constructed for QPSK and 2 transmit antennas by applying constellation scaling and rotation to the set of quaternions used in Alamouti code. Also given is a rate-9/8 full-diversity quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (QOSTBC) for 4 transmit antennas.

Summary: It has been shown that a complex orthogonal design that provides full diversity and full transmission rate for a space-time block code is not possible for more than two antennas. Previous attempts have been concentrated in generalizing orthogonal designs which provide space-time block codes with full diversity and a high transmission rate.
