Dense Space Division Multiplexed Transmission Technology

CLEO: 2015, 2015
We review recent progress in ultra-high capacity transmission based on dense space division multiplexing (DSDM) for future scalable optical transport networks, and present the latest multi-core multi-mode fiber, spatial multi/demultiplexers, and MIMO signal processing technique.

Reduced complexity space division multiplexing receivers

VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. No.00CH37026), 2002
This paper presents space division multiplexing (SDM) as a technology to satisfy the user demand for ever higher bit rates in wireless local area network technology. SDM uses multiple transmit and receive antennas to increase the bit rate proportionally, without reducing the range, delay spread tolerance and spectrum occupancy. The optimal SDM receiver

Optical technologies for space division multiplexing

2014 13th Workshop on Information Optics (WIO), 2014
Many technological challenges have to be overcome before a cost and energy efficient fiber communication system based on space division multiplexing (SDM) can be realized. In this paper we review recent R&D efforts in developing optical components for SDM networks.

Space division multiplexing holography

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1969
A technique is proposed for multiple information storage in a sampled hologram in long-wavelength holographies. An experiment on the proposed technique is conducted to construct a hologram using 15 kHz sound waves and to reconstruct images using laser light.

Components For Space-Division Multiplexing

2017 European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC), 2017
Amplifiers, spatial multiplexers, and routing elements that exploit spatial integration will reduce costs and complexity of future space-division multiplexed transmission systems. Managing spatial modes requires new components such as mode multiplexers, mixers, equalizers, and unscramblers.

Space-Division Multiplexing for Optical Networks

Asia Communications and Photonics Conference 2015, 2015
We review few-mode fiber transmission in terms of how DSP complexity and mode-dependent gain scales with the number of spatial modes. FMF may be most suitable for short-reach applications where MIMO equalization and inline amplification are not required.

Photonic lantern spatial multiplexers in space-division multiplexing

2013 IEEE Photonics Society Summer Topical Meeting Series, 2013
Photonic-lanterns are lossless spatial-multiplexers that scramble N signals onto the N modes of a multi-mode fiber without mode- dependent loss. They can scale to large N and have enabled transmission over a fiber supporting 12 spatial and polarization-modes.

Transmission in space-division multiplexed systems

2015 IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC), 2015
We present the latest developments in multiple-input-multile-output (MIMO) based optical coherent transmission and present recent results performed over few-mode, multimode, and multicore fibers.

Nonlinearities in space-division multiplexed transmission

Optical Fiber Communication Conference/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference 2013, 2013
We discuss the modeling of nonlinear propagation in multi-mode optical fibers. We show that nonlinear propagation in the presence of random mode coupling is described by coupled multi-component Manakov equations. The system implications of these equations on communications performance and information capacity are discussed.

Multicore Fiber for Space Division Multiplexing

Asia Communications and Photonics Conference 2014, 2014
Multicore fibers (MCFs) are expected as a good candidate for overcoming the capacity limit of current optical communication system. In this tutorial, technical challenges and prospect of uncoupled MCFs for space-division multiplexing (SDM) are presented.
