An Impact Assessment of Speed Humps’ Geometric Characteristics and Spacing on Vehicle Speed: An Overview

open access: yesInfrastructures
This review examines the effect of geometric properties and the spacing of road humps on vehicle speed and noise, with a particular emphasis on South Asian contexts, especially Malaysia.

Covering spaces of paracompact spaces [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the American Mathematical Society, 1975
This note proves that in the context of paracompact spaces, a definition used by the author implies the definition used by Saul Lubkin which does not involve the usual connectedness properties associated with covering spaces.

Specialized face perception mechanisms extract both part and spacing information: evidence from developmental prosopagnosia

open access: yes, 2006
It is well established that faces are processed by mechanisms that are not used with other objects. Two prominent hypotheses have been proposed to characterize how information is represented by these special mechanisms.

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Twin boundary spacing-dependent friction in nanotwinned copper

open access: yes, 2012
The deformation mechanisms of nanotwinned Cu subjected to nanoscratching are investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Scratching simulations on nanotwinned single-crystalline Cu with the twin planes parallel and perpendicular to the ...

TRAIL‐PEG‐Apt‐PLGA nanosystem as an aptamer‐targeted drug delivery system potential for triple‐negative breast cancer therapy using in vivo mouse model

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aptamers are used both therapeutically and as targeting agents in cancer treatment. We developed an aptamer‐targeted PLGA–TRAIL nanosystem that exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy in NOD/SCID breast cancer models. This nanosystem represents a novel biotechnological drug candidate for suppressing resistance development in breast cancer.

Greater understanding of spacing needs for children’s eye movements during on-screen reading is required

open access: yes, 2009
This paper endeavors to consolidate current knowledge and empirical research concerning the use of typography for children’s on-screen reading. This paper is not intended as a full literature review, but attempts to raise awareness of the areas required ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Malthus in the bedroom : birth spacing as a preventive check mechanism in pre-modern England [PDF]

open access: yes
The role of demography in long-run economic growth has been subject to increasing attention. This paper questions the received wisdom that marital birth control was absent before the nineteenth century.
