Measurement of nuclide cross-sections of spallation residues in 1 A GeV 238U + proton collisions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The production of heavy nuclides from the spallation-evaporation reaction of 238U induced by 1 GeV protons was studied in inverse kinematics. The evaporation residues from tungsten to uranium were identified in-flight in mass and atomic number.

Laser Driven Compression to Investigate Shock-Induced Melting of Metals

open access: yesMetals, 2014
High pressure shock compression induces a large temperature increase due to the dissipation within the shock front. Hence, a solid sample subjected to intense shock loading can melt, partially or fully, either on compression or upon release from the ...

Effect of Vacancies on Dynamic Response and Spallation in Single-Crystal Magnesium by Molecular Dynamic Simulation

open access: yesMetals, 2022
The effect of vacancies on dynamic response and spallation in single-crystal magnesium (Mg) is investigated by nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations.

On the role of secondary pions in spallation targets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We use particle-transport simulations to show that secondary pions play a crucial role for the development of the hadronic cascade and therefore for the production of neutrons and photons from thick spallation targets.

Numerical simulation of stress wave propagation in joint rock specimens with cavity defects

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
The process of crack initiation, propagation, and coalescence is the essential cause of rock failure. A three-dimensional numerical model based on microscopic damage mechanics is adopted to simulate the failure process and acoustic emissions (AEs) of a ...

Investigations of fast neutron production by 190 GeV/c muon interactions on different targets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
The production of fast neutrons (1 MeV - 1 GeV) in high energy muon-nucleus interactions is poorly understood, yet it is fundamental to the understanding of the background in many underground experiments. The aim of the present experiment (CERN NA55) was

Tests of Fundamental Symmetries with Neutrons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Because of recent technological developments, new opportunities to test fundamental symmetries using cold and ultra-cold neutrons will become available in the next several years.

Computing and Detector Simulation Framework for the HIBEAM/NNBAR Experimental Program at the ESS [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2021
The HIBEAM/NNBAR program is a proposed two-stage experiment at the European Spallation Source focusing on searches for baryon number violation via processes in which neutrons convert to antineutrons.

Mechanisms of High Temperature Degradation of Thermal Barrier Coatings. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are crucial for increasing the turbine inlet temperature (and hence efficiency) of gas turbine engines. The thesis describes PhD research aimed at improving understanding of the thermal cycling failure mechanisms of ...
