Laser spark initiated microwave discharge

Technical Physics Letters, 2010
The process of laser-spark-assisted initiation of microwave (MW) discharge in the free space has been experimentally studied. It is established that a threshold for laser-spark-initiated MW discharge at atmospheric pressure decreases in a broad range of MW pulse delay times relative to the laser pulse.

Discharges spark discourse

Physics World, 1991
I refer to the article by Keith Davies and Jason Kerr (February, Physics in Action p35). Based on work carried out many years ago for electrically sensitive explosives, the capacitance of the human body in explosive environments is generally taken as 500 pF and the likely maximum electrostatic charge potential as 10 kV, giving a stored energy of 25 mJ.

Excitation temperatures in spark discharges

Spectrochimica Acta, 1957
Abstract The paper describes measurements of spectral line intensities in the vapour clouds emitted from the electrodes in controlled spark discharges carrying a current of rectangular pulse shape. Measurements were made during current flow and in the afterglow for the whole discharge and with spatial resolution.

Development of the Spark Discharge

Nature, 1937
SOME time ago, one of us1 photographed the long electric spark with a rotating camera and showed that a preliminary discharge occurred prior to the main spark, just as in the case of the lightning discharge studied by Prof. B. F. J. Schonland and others.

Spark discharges for surgical applications

2010 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference, 2010
We have investigated the potential of spark discharges as a minimally invasive surgical tool. The spark was generated between the tips of two 0.4-mm acupuncture needles, which were inserted into the tissue. The needle tips were facing each other at a distance of 7 mm.

Spark discharges in condensed media

Technical Physics, 2001
The formalism of phase transition waves is shown to be applicable to the description of both fast and slow discharges in condensed media. The definitions of a streamer and leader are refined, and the mechanisms for their formation and propagation are described. The discharge propagation velocities in low-and high-resistivity media are estimated.

Spark discharges in iodine vapour

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 1981
Sparks in iodine vapour have been studied at pressures between 0.08 and 0.80 Torr, and for gaps of the order of 10 cm. Sparks were initiated in non-uniform fields, using voltage pulses between 1 kV and 3 kV, corresponding to overvoltages of up to 300%. Development of the spark proceeds through a glow phase to a filamentary arc.

Shock waves from spark discharges

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 1969
Measurements of the expansion rates of the cylindrical shock waves produced in the early stages of spark-channel formation are given. Comparison with predicted rates, based on an improved analytical treatment, are satisfactory.

The Lightning and Spark Discharges

Nature, 1941
IT has recently been pointed out1 that though the charge leaving the cloud in a lightning flash to earth is probably about half as great again as had hitherto been believed, the potential of the thundercloud base is probably only a few per cent of previous estimates2.

HYDROCARBON PLASMA REFORMING THROUGH INTERMITTENT SPARK DISCHARGES

High Temperature Material Processes (An International Quarterly of High-Technology Plasma Processes), 2009
High d.c. voltage discharges in air/CH4 mixtures at atmospheric pressure are experimentally studied in order to obtain the production of hydrogen enriched gas flows. This is aimed to investigate the possibility of a plasma hydrogen reforming process.
