Development of Spark Discharges

Nature, 1948
IN a recent communication1 concerning the mechanism of growth of the leader strokes preceding spark discharges, Allibone has stated that the leader stroke develops behind a voluminous corona discharge and that the concentrated bright streamer, which is readily photographed, is in the nature of a ‘core' to this corona.

Development of the Spark Discharge

Nature, 1937
SOME time ago, one of us1 photographed the long electric spark with a rotating camera and showed that a preliminary discharge occurred prior to the main spark, just as in the case of the lightning discharge studied by Prof. B. F. J. Schonland and others.

Power Measurements of Spark Discharge Experiments

Origins of life and evolution of the biosphere, 1998
An accurate and precise knowledge of the amount of energy introduced into prebiotic discharge experiments is important to understand the relative roles of different energy sources in the synthesis of organic compounds in the primitive Earth's atmosphere and other planetary atmospheres.

The Lightning and Spark Discharges

Nature, 1941
IT has recently been pointed out1 that though the charge leaving the cloud in a lightning flash to earth is probably about half as great again as had hitherto been believed, the potential of the thundercloud base is probably only a few per cent of previous estimates2.

The Channel of the Spark Discharge

Physical Review, 1943
The luminous channel of the spark discharge and the discharge current are simultaneously measured. It is concluded that the spark discharge in air attempts to establish a channel in which the current density is a constant value of the order of ${10}^{3}$ amperes/${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$. During the formation of the channel, which takes place by an expansion

Real-time animation of spark discharge

The Visual Computer, 2006
We have developed a CG technique that creates real-time animations of spark discharges. The technique proposed in this paper has factors related to the generation of a discharge, such as electric charge distribution and boundary conditions in a virtual space as the input, and generates spark discharge shape patterns based on the electric field defined ...

Thermalization of a spark discharge

Journal of Applied Physics, 1975
A thermalization process that depends on both localized and channelized Ohmic heating of a plasma in a spark discharge is proposed. A satisfactory quantitative description of a spark current pulse observed in a recent experiment by Barreto, Reynolds, and Jurenka is given in terms of the proposed process.

The Miller Volcanic Spark Discharge Experiment

Science, 2008
Miller's 1950s experiments used, besides the apparatus known in textbooks, one that generated a hot water mist in the spark flask, simulating a water vapor‐rich volcanic eruption. We found the original extracts of this experiment in Miller's material and reanalyzed them.

A Theory of Spark Discharge

Physical Review, 1940
The breakdown of a uniform field is considered to occur by the transition of an electron avalanche proceeding from cathode to anode into a self-propagating streamer, which develops from anode to cathode to form a conducting filament between the electrodes.

Possible Influences of Spark Discharges on Cardiac Pacemakers

Health Physics, 2016
Exposure to spark discharges may occur beneath high voltage transmission lines when contact is initiated with a conductive object (such as a motor vehicle) with the spark discharge mediated by the ambient electric field from the line. The objective of this study was to assess whether such exposures could interfere with the normal functioning of ...
