Nonlinear control of a spark-ignition engine

IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, 1995
This paper describes the improvements which can be made to a spark-ignition engine by extensive use of automatic control. Particular emphasis is placed on fast transient phases produced by simultaneous action on the throttle and the electronic fuel injection device.

Effect of Spark-Ignition on Combustion Periods during Spark-Assisted Compression Ignition

Combustion Science and Technology, 2009
Previous works employed pressure-based heat release analysis, spark-discharge current/voltage measurements, and cycle-resolved combustion imaging to identify four periods of stratified-charge spark-assisted compression ignition: spark discharge, early kernel growth (EKG), flame propagation, and compression ignition.

A new ignition model for spark-ignited engine simulations

Parallel Computing, 2001
The amount of spark energy deposited into the combustion chamber is key to an optimum ignition as one can end up with misfires when this energy is low or with other undesired effects on engine performance and byproducts when it is high. Experimentally, up to now, no one has been able to correlate the combustion outcome accurately to the spark ...

Spark ignition engine torque management

Proceedings of the 2003 American Control Conference, 2003., 2004
Presented in this paper is a robust feedback controller design procedure to regulate the torque of a spark ignition engine equipped with an electronic throttle mass air flow controller. To this end, a system level model of engine torque production is experimentally determined.

Igniting the Spark

This chapter explores the importance of inspiration in leadership and its value in ensuring organizations thrive. The value of being inspired and inspiring others is examined, as well as the ways in which inspiration is created. Through real-life examples, autonomy, mastery, purpose and connection are deeply explored as the conditions necessary for ...

An investigation of the ignition of a gas by an electric spark

British Journal of Applied Physics, 1959
By using flashes of microsecond duration it has been possible to obtain a series of shadowgrams showing the development of steadily propagating flames. About 100μs must elapse before any difference can be detected between the flame kernels which will propagate and those which subsequently degenerate.

Misfire Diagnosis in Spark Ignition Engines

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2002
<div class="htmlview paragraph">The paper deals with the implementation of a diagnosis procedure able to reveal if anomalies in the combustion process of a spark ignition engine appear and then to identify the responsible cylinder.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">The procedure, based on the processing of the exhaust pressure ...

Minimum ignition energy for laser spark ignition

Proceedings of the Combustion Institute, 2005
Abstract Combustion ignition by electrical sparks and nonresonant laser sparks is preceded by breakdown, electron heating, relaxation of internal plasma energy, shock wave generation and propagation, and subsonic flows. Measurements and model calculations of these processes (which occur over times of 10 −12 –10 −1  s) in laser sparks show that the ...
