Spark ignition engine torque management
Proceedings of the 2003 American Control Conference, 2003., 2004Presented in this paper is a robust feedback controller design procedure to regulate the torque of a spark ignition engine equipped with an electronic throttle mass air flow controller. To this end, a system level model of engine torque production is experimentally determined.

This chapter considers how the combustion process is initiated and constrained in spark ignition engines. The air/fuel mixture has to be close to stoichiometric (chemically correct) for satisfactory spark ignition and flame propagation. The equivalence ratio or mixture strength of the air/fuel mixture also affects pollutant emissions, as discussed in ...

Hybrid tracking control for spark-ignition engines
Proceedings of the 39th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (Cat. No.00CH37187), 2002The design of a torque tracking controller for a spark ignition engine is presented. A hybrid model that describes the interacting behavior of the intake manifold, the engine, the power-train and the catalytic converter is illustrated. The proposed control is obtained by: 1) decoupling the control problem into two sub-problems; and 2) relaxing each of ...

Heavy-Duty Spark Ignition Engines Fueled With Methane
Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 1991Pollution reduction in urban areas is a major driving force to upgrade mass transportation systems. Options to the urban planner include electric traction and combustion engine upgrade. Electric traction centralizes the emission source, usually removed from urban areas, but requires substantial capital costs and lead time for the transportation ...
