Salmonella detection and aerobic colony count in deep-frozen carcasses of house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and starling (Sturnus vulgaris) intended for human consumption

open access: yesItalian Journal of Food Safety, 2014
Wild birds are potential vehicles of zoonotic pathogen transmission to humans. The zoonotic concern increases for small wild birds like house sparrows (Passer domesticus) and starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) which are hunted in developing countries and ...

Heat loss may explain bill size differences between birds occupying different habitats. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Research on variation in bill morphology has focused on the role of diet. Bills have other functions, however, including a role in heat and water balance.

Hadamard Matrix Slicing Single‐Pixel Imaging: Establishing a Linear‐Array‐Inspired Paradigm for N‐fold Acceleration Single‐Pixel Imaging

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
To overcome two‐dimensional modulation bottlenecks, Hadamard Matrix Slicing Single‐Pixel Imaging (HMS‐SPI) establishes an efficient one‐dimensional imaging paradigm. By slicing the traditional Hadamard matrix into one‐dimensional encoding vectors and spatially expanding them, the required measurement patterns decrease by a factor of N.

Body size changes in passerine birds introduced to New Zealand from the UK [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
One feature of global geographic variation in avian body sizes is that they are larger on isolated islands than on continental regions. Therefore, this study aims to assess whether there have been changes in body size following successful establishment ...

An Autonomous Large Language Model‐Agent Framework for Transparent and Local Time Series Forecasting

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
Architecture of the proposed large language model (LLM)‐based agent framework for autonomous time series forecasting in thermal power generation systems. The framework operates through a vertical pipeline initiated by natural language queries from users, which are processed by the LLM Agent Core powered by Llama.cpp and a ReAct loop with persistent ...

Behavioral, morphological, and ecological trait evolution in two clades of New World Sparrows (Aimophila and Peucaea, Passerellidae) [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2020
The New World sparrows (Passerellidae) are a large, diverse group of songbirds that vary in morphology, behavior, and ecology. Thus, they are excellent for studying trait evolution in a phylogenetic framework.

Life-history and hormonal control of aggression in black redstarts: blocking testosterone does not decrease territorial aggression, but changes the emphasis of vocal behaviours during simulated territorial intrusions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Introduction: Many studies in behavioural endocrinology attempt to link territorial aggression with testosterone, but the exact relationship between testosterone and territorial behaviour is still unclear and may depend on the ecology of a species.

Remote Language Assessment in School‐Age Children With Phelan–McDermid Syndrome and Genotype–Phenotype Correlation

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part A, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT People with Phelan–McDermid syndrome (PMS) have reduced speech and language abilities, yet little research has profiled the communication abilities in this population. The purpose of this study was threefold: identifying the language and communication profiles of school‐aged children with PMS, identifying genetic contributions to language and ...

Variation in Hematological Indices, Oxidative Stress, and Immune Function Among Male Song Sparrows From Rural and Low-Density Urban Habitats

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2022
A central theme in the field of ecology is understanding how environmental variables influence a species’ distribution. In the last 20 years, there has been particular attention given to understanding adaptive physiological traits that allow some species
