An Effective Method Incorporating Binary Prior Information for Programmable Metasurface‐Based Microwave Computational Imaging

open access: yesIET Radar, Sonar & Navigation
Microwave computational imaging (MCI) combined with programmable metasurface (PMS) has seen significant advancements in recent years. This new microwave imaging technology performs multiplexed measurements by manipulating the radiation pattern of PMS and

Moisture inversions in the central Arctic: Product assessment and long‐wave radiative effect

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study evaluates the integrated water vapour and the vertical distribution of water vapour of state‐of‐the‐art reanalyses, weather forecast models, and ground‐ and space‐based remote‐sensing products in the central Arctic. A particular focus lies on the representation of humidity inversions and the quantification of the long‐wave radiative effect ...

A new method to identify and explain sources of precipitation modification, illustrated for the western Netherlands

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study develops a method to identify the source areas of precipitation events, as illustrated for the western part of the Netherlands. Radar‐based precipitation data are traced back to their source areas and machine‐learning techniques are used to identify hypothesized causes: urban heat, surface roughness, and air pollution. We find that urban and

How AI and Digital Technologies Can Enhance Sustainable Livestock Manure Management: An Overview From Treatment to Distribution

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Sustainable livestock manure management sits at the nexus of climate, nutrient circularity and water quality. This review explores how artificial intelligence (AI) and digital platforms are used across four management stages, that is, treatment, storage, valorisation and distribution, and figures out where integration fails to deliver ...

Quality from Kent: Preliminary results from the analysis of fifth‐ to seventh‐century silver alloys

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
Abstract This paper explores early results from the chemical and lead isotope analysis of 30 silver‐alloy objects from southeast England dating between the fifth and seventh centuries CE, presenting limited aspects of the three main analyses that were conducted. First, a comparison of the results gained from surface x‐ray fluorescence (pXRF) values and

Vessel‐associated microglia are differentially activated and distributed in relation to systemic infection and Alzheimer's disease

open access: yesBrain Pathology, EarlyView.
This post‐mortem study revealed an increased density of vessel‐associated microglia (VAM) in the temporal lobe in systemic infection and Alzheimer's disease. VAM density was related to brain cytokine levels and markers of cerebrovascular dysfunction and BBB leakage indicating that activated VAM contributes to neurovascular injury in Alzheimer's disease.

Characterizing Cropland Phenology in Major Grain Production Areas of Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan by the Synergistic Use of Passive Microwave and Visible to Near Infrared Data

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2016
We demonstrate the synergistic use of surface air temperature retrieved from AMSR-E (Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer on Earth observing satellite) and two vegetation indices (VIs) from the shorter wavelengths of MODIS (MODerate resolution Imaging ...

Vast, overlooked peat, and organic soils in Brazil's Cerrado: carbon storage, dynamics, and stability

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Tropical peatlands are critical for climate mitigation due to their dual role as major carbon sinks and methane sources. In rainforests, high and stable rainfall supports peat accumulation in tropical climates. However, groundwater‐fed peatlands in seasonally dry tropical ecosystems remain poorly understood, despite their potential importance ...

Toward High-Resolution Soil Moisture Monitoring by Combining Active-Passive Microwave and Optical Vegetation Remote Sensing Products with Land Surface Model

open access: yesSensors, 2019
The assimilation of radiometer and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is a promising recent technique to downscale soil moisture products, yet it requires land surface parameters and meteorological forcing data at a high spatial resolution.

Reprogramming of Gene Transcripts and Metabolites by the Wild Soybean Endophyte Pseudomonas sp. 77S3 Improves Soybean Salt Tolerance

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Soybean is a critical source of protein and vegetable oil worldwide. Expanding its cultivation into salinity lands represents a promising strategy for increasing production; however, soil salinity severely limits soybean growth by disrupting physiological and metabolic homeostasis.
