Efficient optical amplification for spatial division multiplexing
SPIE Proceedings, 2012Spatial division multiplexing has been proposed for fiber capacity increase as an alternative to enhanced bandwidth efficiency by higher order modulation or wider wavelength bands. The commercial viability of this approach will depend strongly on the feasibility of cost and energy efficient optical amplification.

Optical Spatial Division Multiplexing for Ultra-High-Capacity Modular Data Centers
Optical Fiber Communication Conference, 2016We propose and evaluate four optical interconnect architectures based on spatial division multiplexing for ultra-high capacity modular data centers. It is shown in which way the best option depends on the network load and size.

Petabit-class Optical Networks Based on Spatial-Division Multiplexing Technologies
2020 International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modeling (ONDM), 2020We have developed a spatial division multiplexing (SDM) based hierarchical optical switching test-bed capable of handling optical signals with elastic granularity from 10 Tb/s to 1 Pb/s. We have demonstrated some network scenarios of add/drop, express, protection switching, optical channel grooming and SDM tributaries with coupled and uncoupled spatial

Reduced Search Space Scheme for Detection of Spatial Division Multiplexing
2005 IEEE 61st Vehicular Technology Conference, 2005We introduce a suboptimal detection scheme for spatial division multiplexing (SDM) using multiple transmit and receive antennas. As a conventional detection method, zero-forcing (ZF) detection shows inferior performance to the optimal maximum likelihood (ML) scheme because it does not exploit the pattern of the weighted noise characterized by singular ...

High capacity optical transmission systems using spatial division multiplexing technology
2015 International Conference on Photonics in Switching (PS), 2015We review system aspects of few-mode fiber transmission. Mode-dependent loss is difficult to manage and will likely require periodic mode-scrambling. FMF can be deployed first in short reach applications where high spatial density is beneficial, with elliptical-core FMFs being an attractive solution.

Integrated Spatial Division (De)Multiplexer for Few-Mode Fiber Transmission
18th Italian National Conference on Photonic Technologies (Fotonica 2016), 2016A reconfigurable Photonic Integrated Circuit for mode multiplexing and demultiplexing in a few-mode fiber is proposed and demonstrated. The circuit allows to selectively excite and demultiplex modes LP10 and LP11a with an estimated efficiency in the order of -6 dB and modedependent losses smaller than 1 dB. Mode cross-talk is measured as low as -20 dB.
