Spatial Complexity in Children's Language

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 2000
The purpose of this research was to explore the properties of locative scenes which influence the sequence of the acquisition of spatial prepositions in English. Children ranging in age from about 2;8 to 5;6 were tested with a comprehension test involving a sentence-picture matching task. The comprehension test contained six kinds of spatial contrasts

Complex landscapes of spatial interaction [PDF]

open access: possibleThe Annals of Regional Science, 2000
Recently, Paul Krugman posed the intriguing question: ’How complex is the economic landscape? He was not thinking of mountains and rivers over which goods are transported and services channelled, but of an abstract landscape, one that represents the dynamics of resource allocation across activities and locations.

Taming Spatial Complexity

2020
Buffon’s needle, Varignon’s theorem, Jung’s theorem, Sylvester's problem, are all hints that random allocations of spatial objects often obey to geometric restrictions. Further, it can be speculated that, so long as population distributions on surfaces might be represented by strings of symbols, there is no apparent reason why the arcsine law and ...

Simplicity in Complex Spatial Systems

2009
In the past decade, complexity has become an important and fascinating domain for advanced research on nonlinear dynamics, in which a multiplicity of scientific fields are involved (physics, life sciences, social sciences, economics, geography, and so forth).

Complexity and Spatial Networks

2009
In the past decade, complexity has become an important and fascinating domain for advanced research on non-linear dynamics, in which a multiplicity of scientific fields are involved (physics, life sciences, social sciences, economics, geography, and so forth).

Spatial Complexity, Visual Complexity and Aesthetics

2020
The concept of “visual complexity” is related to spatial complexity. From landscapes to paintings and fractals, aesthetic appeal is directly related to spatial complexity (or, at least, to its determinants). In this chapter, it is examined how and why: (a) neither spatial complexity nor simplicity guarantee aesthetic appeal; (b) quite often, neither ...

Complex Spatial/Temporal CFAR

IEEE/ACES International Conference on Wireless Communications and Applied Computational Electromagnetics, 2005., 2005
The conventional cell averaging constant false alarm rate (CFAR) criterion and its variations work well only in strictly spatially stationary environments. In non-homogeneous environments, clutter map (scan-by-scan) processing is deployed. The performance of this method degrades in the presence of slow targets.

Spatial Complexity, Psychology and Qualitative Complexity

2020
How is spatial complexity perceived by humans? The study of spatial complexity is scale-dependent: a spatial entity that may look simple at some spatial level, may reveal many details if examined closer at finer spatial scales. To perceive complexity, we often resort to generalizations: thematic (grouping up similar themes, i.e.

Complex Spatial Dynamics

1990
Abstract : The work done with this grant was on the topic of complex spatial dynamics, and included progress in three areas: (1) analysis of the space of cellular automation rules, particularly with an eye toward the question of where complex cellular automata live in this space, and (2) analyzing data from complex spatial systems, and (3) nonlinear ...
