Passive Spatial Light Modulator
1980A passive real time spatial light modulator (SLM), using an oil layer as phase modulator of a radiation field, is described. Experiments with a SLM as incoherent to coherent image transformer were performed, revealing the limits in resolution and response speed.

The basic symmetry restrictions demanded by ferroelectricity are met by the chiral smectic-C liquid-crystal phase. The chirality or lack of mirror symmetry at molecular level gives rise to a spiral polarity or helioelectric structure.

The pixel of the EH-SLM is a minute prestored volume hologram, the diffraction efficiency of which is controlled by a locally applied electric field.

Spatial light modulators for projection displays
Applied Optics, 1997Spatial light modulators (SLM's) consisting of a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film and a Bi(12)SiO(20) photoconductor are discussed and demonstrated. This device, which uses light scattering in the PDLC film, has several advantages including no polarizer, a low optical loss, and video-rate operation.

Liquid Crystal Integrated Silicon Spatial Light Modulator
Spatial Light Modulators and Applications, 1990Practical optical processing systems require compact and efficient electronically addressed spatial light modulators (EASLM). This can be achieved by integrating ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLC) with silicon-chip technology. The low voltage and power requirements of FLCs are consistent with large-scale silicon integration.
