Spatial light modulator for texture classification
Applied Optics, 1989This paper describes a hybrid computer-optical processor devoted to the analysis of texture. Textures are displayed on a spatial light modulator and their power spectra are calculated optically by a Fourier optical technique. A video camera and a computer with a frame digitizer process the power spectra.

Spatial light modulators for projection displays
Applied Optics, 1997Spatial light modulators (SLM's) consisting of a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film and a Bi(12)SiO(20) photoconductor are discussed and demonstrated. This device, which uses light scattering in the PDLC film, has several advantages including no polarizer, a low optical loss, and video-rate operation.

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses spatial light modulator, which comprises a photocathode, micro channel plate, mesh electrode, and a LiNbO3 crystal in a vacuum-sealed tube. The device is a transducer for incoherent to coherent light conversion; it is highly sensitive and can be used over a wide wavelength range. It can also be used to perform

The success of liquid crystals in visual display devices has assured their commercial viability and made them common in our everyday use. However, their uses and applications go well beyond the displays used on handheld devices. Projection systems, similar to displays, also make use of liquid crystals, but in the form of spatial light modulators.

Phase calibration of spatially nonuniform spatial light modulators
Applied Optics, 2004A new 512 x 512 pixel phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) has been found to deviate from being flat by several wavelengths. Also, the retardation of the SLM relative to voltage varies across the device by as much as 0.25 wavelength. The birefringence of each pixel as a function of address voltage is measured from the intensity of the SLM between ...

Spatial modulation display using spatial light modulators
Optical Engineering, 1992A spatial modulation display is described that permits the observation of a phantom or transparent image by several persons simultaneously and is suitable for medical imaging. The display uses spatial light modulators and large format convex lenses within a Schlieren optical system. The number of sectional images in a three-dimensional image is limited

Photoaddressed liquid crystal spatial light modulators
Applied Optics, 1988Photoaddressed spatial light modulators (SLM) are an efficient means of modulating light with light and provide the benefits of optical parallelism in both write and read modes. Figure 1 shows the general form of a reflective-readout photoaddressed SLM.

Spatial-Light-Modulator Interconnected Computers
Computer, 1987Optical technologies perform the basic computer operations of communications, switching, and storage, have already proven superior to electronics for many communications situations, and advances in devices and materials suggest that optics are important for switching and storage.

Spatial Light Modulation in GaAs
Spatial Light Modulators and Applications, 1988Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) is the most technologically-important compound semiconductor for electronics and optoelectronics. Semi-insulating Cr-doped and undoped GaAs crystals are known to be photorefractive.1,2 This provides opportunities to use GaAs for optical processing, including spatial light modulation. In this paper, we will present recent results
