Finite Scale of Spatial Representation in the Hippocampus

Science, 2008
To determine how spatial scale is represented in the pyramidal cell population of the hippocampus, we recorded neural activity at multiple longitudinal levels of this brain area while rats ran back and forth on an 18-meter-long linear track. CA3 cells had well-defined place fields at all levels.

Effects of Scale in Spatial Interaction Models

Journal of Geographical Systems, 2013
We study the effects of aggregation on four different cases of nonlinear spatial gravity models. We present some theoretical results on the relationship between the mean flows at an aggregated level and the mean flow at the disaggregated level.

Spatial Indexing with a Scale Dimension

1999
It is frequently the case that spatial queries require a result set of objects whose scale - however this may be more precisely defined - is the same as that of the query window. In this paper we present an approach which considerably improves query performance in such cases.

Estimation of local spatial scale

Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 1987
The concept of local scale asserts that for a given class of psychophysical measurements, performance at any two visual field locations is equated by magnifying the targets by the local scale associated with each location. Local scale has been hypothesized to be equal to cortical magnification or alternatively to the linear density of receptors or ...

On the spatial scale of streamers

2014 XXXIth URSI General Assembly and Scientific Symposium (URSI GASS), 2014
We calculate the streamer velocity, which is determined by the streamer mechanisms which include electron drift, electron diffusion and photoionization, in a 1D model that also includes the curvature of the ionization front. In particular, we show that the electron drift may contribute only to the propagation of negative streamers, and the effect of ...

Spatial Scaling in Ecology

Functional Ecology, 1989
Acts in what Hutchinson (1965) has called the 'ecological theatre' are played out on various scales of space and time. To understand the drama, we must view it on the appropriate scale. Plant ecologists long ago recognized the importance of sampling scale in their descriptions of the dispersion or distribution of species (e.g.

Spatial Scale and Biodiversity

2019
The scale of observation leaves an indelible mark on our understanding of biodiversity. Despite wide recognition among ecologists that scale is important, most theories of biodiversity and coexistence treat mechanisms as scale-independent (e.g., coexistence theory).
