Adaptive control of PDEs with uncertain and spatially variable parameters

open access: closed2007 American Control Conference, 2007
This tutorial paper presents comprehensive new techniques for adaptive control of PDE systems. It overviews three design methods - the Lyapunov design, the passive design, and the swapping design and discusses tradeoffs between them. The basic ideas for each design are introduced through benchmark plants with constant unknown coefficients. This is then

A review and integrating analysis of Spatially-Variable Control of crop production

open access: closedFertilizer Research, 1992
The variability of crops, soils, and pests within crop production fields has led to attempts to understand those variations and to manage crop production accordingly. The rapidly expanding research and development on the management and control of crop production according to in-field variations is reviewed.

Field Scale Variations in Soil Properties for Spatially Variable Control: A Review

open access: closedJournal of Soil Contamination, 1998
This article reviews the widely scattered information on spatial variability of field-scale properties. It mainly addresses the variations in properties that influence nitrate accumulation and movement resulting from the agricultural activities in the root zone.

Controlling wave propagation in solids using spatially variable elastic anisotropy

open access: closed, 2011
Stress wave propagation in solids may be controlled through spatially variable anisotropy. Recently, there have been significant efforts to guide the incident stress waves in desired trajectories in order to protect a sensitive region within the material. Here we present our work on a composite material in which stress waves are guided through smoothly

Controls on Spatial Variability of Uranium in Sandstone Aquifers

Groundwater Monitoring & Remediation, 2007
AbstractControls on the spatial variability of uranium (U) in sandstone aquifers were investigated by water sampling and geophysical logging of wells in the Jacobsville Sandstone in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. 235U/238U isotope ratios in well water are consistent with naturally occurring U, likely derived from U‐enriched strata, which make wells in ...

Selection of spatial frame of reference and postural control variability

Experimental Brain Research, 1997
The present paper addresses the question of the possible links between perceptive visual field dependence-independence and the visual contribution to postural control. In our differential approach, visual field dependent (FD) and independent (FI) subjects were selected on the basis of their score in the Rod and Frame Test (subjective vertical).

Control of Protein Adsorption:  Molecular Level Structural and Spatial Variables

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2004
The adsorption of fibrinogen (Fb) and bovine serum albumin onto polycrystalline Au coated with HS(CH2)3O(CH2CH2O)5CH3 was determined by surface plasmon resonance from bare Au (0% coverage) to the complete ( approximately 100% coverage) self-assembled monolayer (SAM).

Controls of the spatial variability of Cr concentration in topsoils of a central French landscape

Geoderma, 2006
The aim of this study is to determine the factors that control the spatial variability of chromium in the topsoil at the landscape scale by using a combination of both individual soil pit informations and systematic soil sampling analyses. The 11 ha study area, located in Massif Central (France), includes contrasted bedrock and topography.

Incorporation of weed spatial variability into the weed control decision‐making process

Weed Research, 1998
Floral surveys were carried out on a field of 28 m × 100 m on the nodes of a regular 2 m × 2 m grid, using a rectangular sampling area of 25 cm × 30 cm. In total, 765 units were sampled, each one characterized by the spatial co‐ordinates and the number of seedlings of different weed species.

Physical forcing controls spatial variability in primary production in the Indian Ocean

Deep Sea Research Part II: Topical Studies in Oceanography, 2021
Abstract In order to examine the spatial variability and controlling factors of primary production in the Indian Ocean, deck-incubation primary production (13C method) and hydrographic properties were measured at 25 locations during inter-monsoon period (April–May 2014).
