The low cycle fatigue life of additive manufactured HAYNES® 282® superalloy was investigated for conventional and high‐productivity processing: samples of the former lasted 1400–1700 cycles, while samples of the latter failed at ~ 1200 cycles, at 760 °C and 1% strain.

Spatter during laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) can induce surface defects, impacting the fatigue performance of the fabricated components. Here, we reveal and explain the links between vapour depression shape and spatter dynamics during LPBF of an Al-Fe ...

Two-fluid model to simulate metal powder bed fusion additive manufacturing
This paper reports our simulations of the metal powder fusion additive manufacturing process based on a two-fluid model. In simulations of metal behavior in which heat is applied by high-density energy sources (e.g., laser or electron beam), the aspects ...

Impact vesiculation – a new trigger for volcanic bubble growth and degassing [PDF]
We highlight a potentially important trigger for bubble growth and degassing in volcanic bombs. We have successfully triggered bubble growth in previously unvesiculated samples of silicate melt during experiments to simulate volcanic bomb impact, by ...

High-resolution 3D weld toe stress analysis and ACPD method for weld toe fatigue crack initiation [PDF]
Weld toe fatigue crack initiation is highly dependent on the local weld toe stress-concentrating geometry including any inherent flaws. These flaws are responsible for premature fatigue crack initiation (FCI) and must be minimised to maximise the fatigue

Herein, environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) is discussed as a powerful extension of conventional SEM for life sciences. By combining high‐resolution imaging with variable pressure and humidity, ESEM allows the analysis of untreated biological materials, supports in situ monitoring of hydration‐driven changes, and advances the functional ...

Cheater\u27s Selfish-Synonymy [PDF]
The February issue (WW 04-45) gave the results of my systematic search for coincidental self-synonymy: pairs of words that are unrelated etymologically but via convergent evolution happen to be spelled the same and c. mean the same.

This study investigates laser metal deposition of aluminum alloys EN AW‐7075 and EN AW‐5083, using powder blending to compensate zinc and magnesium evaporation. In situ alloying and ex situ alloying with ZnAl12 and AZ91 preserve near‐standard compositions and improve mechanical properties.
