Reproduction and larval biology in tunas, and the importance of restricted area spawning grounds

open access: yesReviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries, 2017
Tunas show a wide variety of life history strategies, spatial distributions and migratory behaviors, yet they share a common trait of spawning only in tropical and sub-tropical regions. The warm-water tuna species generally show significant overlap between spawning and feeding grounds, and longer spawning seasons of several months to near year-round ...

Reproductive biology and spawning strategy of the catadromous percichthyid, Macquaria colonorum (Günther, 1863)

Environmental Biology of Fishes, 2011
The reproductive biology and spawning strategy of the iconic catadromous percichthyid, estuary perch Macquaria colonorum was examined from three coastal rivers of south-eastern (SE) Australia. Ovarian and testicular development followed a pattern similar to that of other percichthyids, world-wide.

REPRODUCTIVE-BIOLOGY, SPAWNING AND FIELD FERTILIZATION RATES OF ACANTHASTER-PLANCI

Marine and Freshwater Research, 1992
Gametogenesis and reproductive behaviour of Acanthaster planci were observed at Davies Reef between September 1990 and February 1991. Gonad development in females and males of A. planci peaked in early December 1991. Mean gonad volume then decreased by about 50% following a major spawning in which at least two-thirds of the population participated ...

Reproductive biology of stream-spawning roach, Rutilus rutilus

Environmental Biology of Fishes, 1987
The reproductive biology of roach, Rutilus rutilus, was investigated during 1980–1982 in a small tributary of the eutrophic Lake rungen, southeastern Norway. The upstream migration started in early May with medium or falling water levels and water temperatures of 6–10° C, and lasted until late May or early June. Roach (both males and females) migrating

Reproductive biology and spatiotemporal patterns of spawning in striped marlin Kajikia audax

Journal of Fish Biology, 2012
This study presents the first histology‐based assessment of the reproductive dynamics of south‐west Pacific striped marlin Kajikia audax. Maturity and reproductive status were assessed from histological sections of ovaries (n = 234) and testes (n = 243) of fish caught in commercial longline and recreational fisheries between 2006 and 2009.

Effects of climate and demography on reproductive phenology of a harvested marine fish population

Global Change Biology, 2018
Shifts in phenology are a well‐documented ecological response to changes in climate, which may or may not be adaptive for a species depending on the climate sensitivity of other ecosystem processes.

Population Biology of Steelhead Spawning Runs in Three Pennsylvania Tributaries to Lake Erie

Journal of Great Lakes Research, 2002
Little is currently known about the population biology of steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) that spawn in Pennsylvania's Lake Erie tributaries or the role of natural reproduction in supporting this fishery despite its popularity and importance. The goal of this study was to describe the population characteristics of steelhead spawning runs in Crooked ...
