Projecting the Shift of Chub Mackerel (Scomber japonicus) Spawning Grounds Driven by Climate Change in the Western North Pacific Ocean

open access: yesFishes
Spawning grounds may shift due to climate change and subsequent variations in the marine environment, but few studies have aimed to project shifts in the spawning grounds of chub mackerel driven by climate change.

From snapshots to continuous estimates: Augmenting citizen science with computer vision for fish monitoring

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
This study presents an end‐to‐end computer‐vision pipeline for monitoring fish migration using underwater video. We integrate field camera deployment, annotation, model training and automated in‐season counting to generate continuous, high‐resolution data on river herring spawning migration.

Rhyming in the cold: first evidence of soniferous fishes in the Southern Ocean

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
The acoustic ecology of Southern Ocean fishes remains unknown due to a lack of dedicated acoustic research on the fishes of this ocean. Passive acoustic monitoring data were collected at the South African sub‐Antarctic Prince Edward Islands using an underwater acoustic recorder, and towed underwater Ski‐Monkey cameras were deployed to identify fish ...

Climatic and anthropogenic factors changing spawning pattern and production zone of Hilsa fishery in the Bay of Bengal

open access: yesWeather and Climate Extremes, 2015
Hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha Hamilton) as a single species accounts 12% for more than half of the total marine catches. About 2% of the entire population of the country is directly or indirectly engaged with Hilsa fishing.

Multi‐Platform Deployments of Low‐Cost Devices for Cetacean Passive Acoustic Monitoring

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Recent advances in affordable, user‐friendly devices offer new opportunities to overcome cost constraints of underwater passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) and expand acoustic data collection. In this study, we deployed low‐cost acoustic recorders and underwater cameras across a range of platforms in the Western Mediterranean, including fishing gear ...

Examining the Role of Economic Complexity and Climate Readiness in the Climate‐Fishing Nexus

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper investigates the climate‐fisheries association in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations from 1999 to 2022. A key objective is to explore the role of both the economic complexity index (ECI) and the climate readiness factor (READ) in the climate‐fishing nexus.
