A nonparametric confidence interval for slope based on spearman's rho

Communications in Statistics - Simulation and Computation, 1988
An algorithm is presented for computing an exact nonparametric interval estimate of the slope parameter in a simple linear regression model. The confidence interval is obtained by inverting the hypothesis test for slope that uses Spearman's rho. This method is compared to an exact procedure based on Kendall's tau.

Several methods of constructing confidence intervals (CIs) for Spearman's rho were tested in a Monte Carlo investigation. A total of 2,000 samples of sizes 10, 50, and 200 were randomly drawn from bivariate normal populations with p, equal to .00, .29, .43, .58, .73, and .89.

This article used Monte Carlo methods to investigate the accuracy of formulas presented by Kendall for estimating Pearson's r from X and by Pearson for estimating Pearson's r from rs. Results indicated that the formula for approximating r from r is somewhat more accurate than the formula for approximating r from rs.
