Dynamically Actuated Reconfigurable Topographical Surface Enables Active Control of Implant‐Associated Infections

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A dynamically actuated reconfigurable topographical surface (DARTS) integrates contact‐mediated bactericidal nanotopography with programmable mechanical actuation to actively disrupt bacterial biofilms. Dynamic surface reconfiguration enhances bacterial killing and suppresses implant‐associated infections in vivo, providing a new strategy for active ...

Self-reflection Orients Visual Attention Downward

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2017
Previous research has demonstrated abstract concepts associated with spatial location (e.g., God in the Heavens) could direct visual attention upward or downward, because thinking about the abstract concepts activates the corresponding vertical ...

Special Economic Zones in Africa

open access: yes, 2017
Abstract African countries have sought to replicate the success of East Asia by implementing special economic zones (SEZs). Despite decades of international experience, there is still no blueprint for successful SEZ policies, and the majority of SEZs fall well below expectations.

Rethinking the Economic Performance of Chinese Special Economic Zones

open access: yesEast Asian Economic Review, 2004
Beginning with the 1979 open-door policy, China began its transition from a planned to market economy. Special Economic Zones (SEZ), the first step toward an open door policy, were established. Although Shenzhen, as a representative of SEZ, is widely known for excellent outputs, we do not altogether agree that Chinese economic growth was heavily ...

Opportunities of Semiconducting Oxide Nanostructures as Advanced Luminescent Materials in Photonics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The review discusses the challenges of wide and ultrawide bandgap semiconducting oxides as a suitable material platform for photonics. They offer great versatility in terms of tuning microstructure, native defects, doping, anisotropy, and micro‐ and nano‐structuring. The review focuses on their light emission, light‐confinement in optical cavities, and

INTEGRATION OF THE SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONES IN THE LOCAL ECONOMY:THE CASE OF SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONES IN CAVITEPROVINCE

open access: yesPEOPLE: International Journal of Social Sciences, 2017
The main objective of this study was to examine and analyze the status of integration of the Cavite Special Economic Zones in the local economy. In order to determine the status of integration of the Cavite Special Economic Zones, it is important to note if these SEZs were able to generate employment opportunities to the locals. Moreover, the different

Spin‐Split Edge States in Metal‐Supported Graphene Nanoislands Obtained by CVD

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Combining STM measurements and ab‐initio calculations, we show that zig‐zag edges in graphene nanoislands grown on Ni(111) by CVD retrieve their spin‐polarized edge states after intercalation of a few monolayers of Au. ABSTRACT Spin‐split states localized on zigzag edges have been predicted for different free‐standing graphene nanostructures.
