Hydrogeological Conditions Changes of Tomsk, Russia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The hydro-geological conditions of Tomsk are determined by both natural factors and the impact of the urban infrastructure. Important impact on subsurface water flows involves the complex hydraulic relationship of several geological layers and the ...

Targeting p38α in cancer: challenges, opportunities, and emerging strategies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
p38α normally regulates cellular stress responses and homeostasis and suppresses malignant transformation. In cancer, however, p38α is co‐opted to drive context‐dependent proliferation and dissemination. p38α also supports key functions in cells of the tumor microenvironment, including fibroblasts, myeloid cells, and T lymphocytes.

Oncologists’ palliative care referral behaviour: testing utility of social exchange theory as an explanatory framework

open access: yesBMC Palliative Care
Background Adults and children with cancer are referred to palliative care infrequently or late. Oncologists often gatekeep these referrals. Social exchange theory is used to explain physician referral behaviour in various clinical settings.

Physical Pictures of Transport in Heterogeneous Media: Advection-Dispersion, Random Walk and Fractional Derivative Formulations

open access: yes, 2002
The basic conceptual picture and theoretical basis for development of transport equations in porous media are examined. The general form of the governing equations is derived for conservative chemical transport in heterogeneous geological formations, for

Differential regulation of ZFAS1 splice variants by endoplasmic reticulum stress in hepatocyte cell lines

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ZFAS1 is a lncRNA promoting cell proliferation and migration, exhibiting high expression in various cancers. It is conserved, widely expressed, and produces multiple splice variants with unclear roles. We identified several splice variants in hepatocyte models, and found that inhibiting or suppressing regulators of the unfolded protein response (PERK ...

Scattering problem in nonequilibrium quasiclassical theory of metals and superconductors: General boundary conditions and applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
I derive a general set of boundary conditions for quasiclassical transport theory of metals and superconductors that is valid for equilibrium and nonequilibrium situations and includes multiband systems, weakly and strongly spin-polarized systems, and ...

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Quality of palliative and end-of-life care: a quantitative study of temporal trends and differences according to illness trajectories in Quebec (Canada)

open access: yesBMC Palliative Care
Background Our aim was to assess temporal trends and compare quality indicators related to Palliative and End-of-Life Care (PEoLC) experienced by people dying of cancer (trajectory I), organ-failure (Trajectory II), and frailty/dementia (trajectory III ...

Managing thyroid dysfunction in selected special situations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Managing thyroid dysfunction is simple at first glance, the idea is to bring hormone levels in the euthyroid range, treat with antithyroid drugs, radio-iodine or surgery if toxic and replace with thyroxine or T3 if hypothyroid.

The Impact of Tilburg Frailty on Poststroke Fatigue in First‐Ever Stroke Patients: A Cross‐Sectional Study With Unified Measurement Tools and Improved Statistics

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Poststroke fatigue (PSF) and frailty share substantial overlap in their manifestations, yet previous research has yielded conflicting results due to the use of heterogeneous frailty assessment tools. Objective To evaluate the independent impact of frailty on PSF using a unified measurement system (Tilburg Frailty Indicator, TFI ...
