Chaotic flow: The physics of species coexistence [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2000
Hydrodynamical phenomena play a keystone role in the population dynamics of passively advected species such as phytoplankton and replicating macromolecules. Recent developments in the field of chaotic advection in hydrodynamical flows encourage us to revisit the population dynamics of species competing for the same resource in an open aquatic ...

Zenith placement of camera traps can individually identify the güiña Leopardus guigna: implications for population studies and conservation

open access: yesOryx
Population estimates of abundance and density are key metrics to evaluate the conservation status of wild felids and inform conservation actions. Individual identification of wild felids with camera traps has been carried out mostly for large and ...

A missing link between facilitation and plant species coexistence: nurses benefit generally rare species more than common ones [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
1. Positive interactions among plants can increase species richness by relaxing environmental filters and providing more heterogeneous environments. However, it is not known if facilitation could affect coexistence through other mechanisms.

The relative importance of seed competition, resource competition and perturbations on community structure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
While the regional climate is the primary selection pressure for whether a plant strategy can survive, however, competitive interactions strongly affect the relative abundances of plant strategies within communities.

Interspecific association characteristics of Alternanthera philoxeroides-invaded communities and their latitudinal variations

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution
Biological invasions can lead to changes in the interspecific association and coexistence patterns of plant species; however, the differences in the interspecific association characteristics of invaded plant communities in heterogeneous habitats and ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Niche specialization and community niche space increase with species richness in filter‐feeder assemblages

open access: yesEcosphere, 2023
Ecological theory posits that higher species richness should be associated with greater exploitation of resources and niche packing resulting from either increasing species niche overlap or specialization of species' niches.

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.

Long-Term Coexistence of Rotifer Cryptic Species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Despite their high morphological similarity, cryptic species often coexist in aquatic habitats presenting a challenge in the framework of niche differentiation theory and coexistence mechanisms.

A signal of competitive dominance in mid-latitude herbaceous plant communities

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2021
Understanding the main determinants of species coexistence across space and time is a central question in ecology. However, ecologists still know little about the scales and conditions at which biotic interactions matter and how these interact with the ...
