Incorporation of Selenium into Sol–Gel‐Derived Bioactive Glass: Influence on Glass Structure, Bioactivity, and its Selective Cytotoxicity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Selenium was incorporated into a sol–gel‐derived bioactive glass to enable sustained therapeutic ion release. The selenium‐containing glass preserved bioactivity while selectively inducing cytotoxicity in osteosarcoma cells and maintaining osteoblastic viability.

Seed sowing shifts native–exotic richness relationships in favor of natives during restoration

open access: yesEcosphere
A central goal of ecological restoration is to promote diverse ecosystems dominated by native species, but restorations are often plagued by exotic species.

The Effects of Sampling-Site Intervals on Fish Species Richness in Wadeable Rivers: A Case Study from Taizi River Basin, Northeastern China

open access: yesDiversity
Fish play an important role in river ecosystems, and the conservation of their diversity is a common goal worldwide. It is still unclear how fish monitoring programs should be developed in order to rationalize the monitoring of fish diversity in rivers ...

Relationships between Plant Diversity and Grasshopper Diversity and Abundance in the Little Missouri National Grassland

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, 2011
A continuing challenge in orthopteran ecology is to understand what determines grasshopper species diversity at a given site. In this study, the objective was to determine if variation in grasshopper abundance and diversity between 23 sites in western ...

Elevational patterns of bird species richness on the eastern slope of Mt. Gongga, Sichuan Province, China

open access: yesAvian Research, 2019
Background In biological systems, biological diversity often displays a rapid turn-over across elevations. This defining feature has made mountains classic systems for studying the spatial variation in diversity. Because patterns of elevational diversity

Time‐Dependent Oxidation and Scale Evolution of a Wrought Co/Ni‐Based Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows how a new wrought Co/Ni‐based superalloy resists oxidation at 800 ∘$^\circ$C. The oxide scale changes from rough, fast‐growing spinel to a dense, protective chromia–alumina layer. Atom probe analysis reveals tiny refractory‐rich bubbles at the interface that mark the transition to long‐term, diffusion‐controlled protection ...

Differential influences of island biogeographic effects on the diversity among three plant life-forms

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation
Traditional island biogeography posits that area and remoteness are key determinants of species richness. However, this theory is challenged by recent changes in species dispersal patterns caused by human activity and climate change.
