Biodiversity of freshwater fishes of Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The proximity of the speciose South American continent to Trinidad and Tobago ensures that these islands have a rich and dynamic fauna. According to the equilibrium theory of island biogeography (MacArthur & Wilson 1967), these islands should be ...

Shrub facilitation increases plant diversity along an arid scrubland-temperate rainforest boundary in South America [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Theoretical models predict nurse plant facilitation enhances species richness by ameliorating stressful environmental conditions and expanding distributional ranges of stress-intolerant species into harsh environments.

Transcripts enriched in codons that trigger P‐site tRNA‐mediated mRNA decay possess stable mRNA

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
PTMD codons were first described by Mendel et al. as mediators of an mRNA decay pathway dependent on the human protein CNOT3, homologous to yeast Not5. Our findings confirm that PTMD codons destabilize transcripts; however, unlike in yeast, the human pathway specifically targets and slightly destabilizes primarily stable mRNAs.

The Effects of Sampling-Site Intervals on Fish Species Richness in Wadeable Rivers: A Case Study from Taizi River Basin, Northeastern China

open access: yesDiversity
Fish play an important role in river ecosystems, and the conservation of their diversity is a common goal worldwide. It is still unclear how fish monitoring programs should be developed in order to rationalize the monitoring of fish diversity in rivers ...

Elevational patterns of bird species richness on the eastern slope of Mt. Gongga, Sichuan Province, China

open access: yesAvian Research, 2019
Background In biological systems, biological diversity often displays a rapid turn-over across elevations. This defining feature has made mountains classic systems for studying the spatial variation in diversity. Because patterns of elevational diversity

Large range sizes link fast life histories with high species richness across wet tropical tree floras [PDF]

open access: yes
Understanding how the traits, of lineages are related to diversification is key for elucidating the origin of variation in species richness.

Hyperosmotic stress‐induced redistribution of pre‐mRNA cleavage factor I subunits is associated with shifts in alternative polyadenylation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Hyperosmotic stress triggers the relocation of the CFIm complex from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. This shift creates a nuclear ‘stoichiometric bottleneck’, limiting CFIm availability for mRNA processing. Consequently, specific mRNAs like NUDT21 and DICER1 undergo targeted 3′UTR shortening, demonstrating how spatial protein dynamics drive rapid ...

Seed sowing shifts native–exotic richness relationships in favor of natives during restoration

open access: yesEcosphere
A central goal of ecological restoration is to promote diverse ecosystems dominated by native species, but restorations are often plagued by exotic species.
