The performance of coalescent-based species tree estimation methods under models of missing data

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2018
Background Estimation of species trees from multiple genes is complicated by processes such as incomplete lineage sorting, gene duplication and loss, and horizontal gene transfer, that result in gene trees that differ from each other and from the species

Sorting Phenomena in a Mathematical Model For Two Mutually Attracting/Repelling Species [PDF]

open access: yesSIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, 2018
Macroscopic models for systems involving diffusion, short-range repulsion, and long-range attraction have been studied extensively in the last decades. In this paper we extend the analysis to a system for two species interacting with each other according to different inner- and intra-species attractions.

Multispectral Sorting Based on Visibly High-Risk Kernels Sourced from Another Country Reduces Fumonisin and Toxigenic Fusarium on Maize Kernels

open access: yesJournal of Food Protection, 2023
Fusarium species infect maize crops leading to the production of fumonisin by their toxigenic members. Elimination of microbes is critical in mitigating further postharvest spoilage and toxin accumulation. The current study investigates the efficacy of a

Flow sorting in aquatic ecology

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2000
Flow sorting can be a very helpful tool in revealing phytoplankton and bacterial community structure and elaborating specific physiological parameters of isolated species. Droplet sorting has been the most common technique.

A distinct sortase SrtB anchors and processes a streptococcal adhesin AbpA with a novel structural property. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Surface display of proteins by sortases in Gram-positive bacteria is crucial for bacterial fitness and virulence. We found a unique gene locus encoding an amylase-binding adhesin AbpA and a sortase B in oral streptococci.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Spatial structures of the environment and of dispersal impact species distribution in competitive metacommunities.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
The correspondence between species distribution and the environment depends on species' ability to track favorable environmental conditions (via dispersal) and to maintain competitive hierarchy against the constant influx of migrants (mass effect) and ...

An analytical comparison of coalescent-based multilocus methods: The three-taxon case [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Incomplete lineage sorting (ILS) is a common source of gene tree incongruence in multilocus analyses. A large number of methods have been developed to infer species trees in the presence of ILS.

Bud protection: a key trait for species sorting in a forest–savanna mosaic [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytologist, 2015
Summary Contrasting fire regimes maintain patch mosaics of savanna, thicket and forest biomes in many African subtropical landscapes. Species dominating each biome are thus expected to display distinct fire‐related traits, commonly thought to be bark related.

Structural insights into lacto‐N‐biose I recognition by a family 32 carbohydrate‐binding module from Bifidobacterium bifidum

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bifidobacterium bifidum establishes symbiosis with infants by metabolizing lacto‐N‐biose I (LNB) from human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). The extracellular multidomain enzyme LnbB drives this process, releasing LNB via its catalytic glycoside hydrolase family 20 (GH20) lacto‐N‐biosidase domain.
