Effect of membrane lipids on the lactosylceramide molecular species specificity of CMP-N-acetylneuraminate:lactosylceramide sialyltransferase

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1993
It has previously been shown that when the molecular species specificity of rat liver Golgi CMP-N-acetylneuraminate:lactosylceramide alpha 2,3-sialyltransferase was determined, using as the substrate lactosylceramide (LacCer) incorporated into liposomes ...

On the species specificity of the interaction of LFA-1 with intercellular adhesion molecules.

open access: yesJournal of Immunology, 1990
Species restrictions in immune cell interactions have been demonstrated both in Ag-specific responses of T lymphocytes and the phenomenon of natural attachment.

Capacitation of Rabbit Spermatozoa: Species Specificity and Organ Specificity.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1967
SummaryIt has been found that washed rabbit sperm may be capacitated in the uterus of an estrous rabbit, rat, and dog, indicating that the capacitation mechanism is similar in these species. It was shown that washed rabbit sperm are capacitated only in the uterus and oviduct of the estrous rabbit and not in the bladder, colon and knee joint, indicating

Mapping the evolution of mitochondrial complex I through structural variation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Respiratory complex I (CI) is crucial for bioenergetic metabolism in many prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is composed of a conserved set of core subunits and additional accessory subunits that vary depending on the organism. Here, we categorize CI subunits from available structures to map the evolution of CI across eukaryotes. Respiratory complex I (CI)

Plasmodium falciparum gametogenesis essential protein 1 (GEP1) is a transmission‐blocking target

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study shows Plasmodium falciparum GEP1 is vital for activating sexual stages of malarial parasites even independently of a mosquito factor. Knockout parasites completely fail gamete formation even when a phosphodiesterase inhibitor is added. Two single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (V241L and S263P) are found in 12%–20% of field samples.

Linked dimers of the AAA+ ATPase Msp1 reveal energetic demands and mechanistic plasticity for substrate extraction from lipid bilayers

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells must clear mislocalized or faulty proteins from membranes to survive. The AAA+ ATPase Msp1 performs this task, but dissecting how its six subunits work together is challenging. We engineered linked dimers with varied numbers of functional subunits to reveal how Msp1 subunits cooperate and use energy to extract proteins from the lipid bilayer ...
