Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Dialectical Materialism or Dialectics of the Human?: Marxism and Animal Liberation Movement

open access: yesUluslararası Halkbilimi Araştırmaları Dergisi
With reference to the book “18 Theses on Marxism and Animal Liberation”, published by the Alliance for Marxism and Animal Liberation, which aims to create a point of consensus between Marxism and the anti-speciesism struggle, this article discusses the ...

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

The Problem of Evil in Nature: Evolutionary Bases of the Prevalence of Disvalue

open access: yesRelations, 2015
This paper examines the problem of evil in nature, that is, the issue of the disvalue present in nature, and the question of whether or not it prevails over happiness. The paper claims that disvalue actually outweighs happiness in nature.

Not all Humans, Radical Criticism of the Anthropocene Narrative [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Earth scientists have declared that we are living in “the Anthropocene,” but radical critics object to the implicit attribution of responsibility for climate disruption to all of humanity. They are right to object.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Peter Singer’s Speciesist Notion of Animal Conservation Vis-a-Vis Genetic Manipulation

open access: yesStudia Ecologiae et Bioethicae
This paper shows how human activity through genetic engineering causes pain to non-human animals. It primarily deals with an evaluation of the phenomenon of animal rights (specifically animal conservation) from the view of Singer’s notion of speciesism.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Astrobiology and astrophilosophy: subsuming or bifurcating diciplines? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Initially, astrobiology subsumed into philosophy. However, philosophy has increasingly subsumed into astrobiology concurrent with it steadily becoming an observational and experimental activity that mainly focuses on the link between life and the cosmos,
