On the Geometry of Speciesist Policing: The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Animal Cruelty Data

open access: yesInternational Journal for Crime, Justice and Social Democracy, 2023
This article contests the animal cruelty statistics newly collected and publicized in the US by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In what follows, we (1) outline the inclusion of animal cruelty in the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting ...

The Speciesism Debate: Intuition, Method, and Empirical Advances. [PDF]

open access: yesAnimals (Basel), 2019
Simple Summary An influential idea in animal ethics is that moral favouritism towards members of one’s own species is a prejudice. This prejudice has been labelled ‘speciesism’, in analogy with racism and sexism.

Astrobiology and astrophilosophy: subsuming or bifurcating diciplines? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Initially, astrobiology subsumed into philosophy. However, philosophy has increasingly subsumed into astrobiology concurrent with it steadily becoming an observational and experimental activity that mainly focuses on the link between life and the cosmos,

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Dépasser l’analogie, écouter les opprimé·es : patriarcat et blanchité dans le discours antispéciste

open access: yesGlad!
This article provides an insight about two misuses of the analogy in Animal Ethics: first, the analogy between speciesism and sexism; second, the analogy between the enslavement of Black people in Africa and animal exploitation (which itself serves a ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Primatology, Green Criminology, and the Impacts of Science on the Non-Human World: A Debate from Japan

open access: yesInternational Journal for Crime, Justice and Social Democracy, 2022
Primatology was initiated in Japan in 1948 by Kinji Imanishi and his colleagues. A distinctive feature of Japanese primatology is adopting the technique of ‘anthropomorphising’ non-human primates and establishing friendly relationships with them through ...

Posthumanism: A Fickle Philosophy? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Defining posthumanism as a single, well-oriented philosophy is a difficult if not impossible endeavour. Part of the reason for this difficulty is accounted by posthumanism’s illusive origins and its perpetually changing hermeneutics.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).
