General vs. Specific Combining Ability in Single Crosses of Corn1 [PDF]

open access: possibleAgronomy Journal, 1942
Abstract: A method is presented for evaluating the relative importance of genes contributing to general and specific combining ability in the yield of single crosses of corn. In single crosses involving previously tested lines, genes conditioning specific combining ability have the most effect in determining yield differences.

Specific and general combining ability for yield in potatoes

American Potato Journal, 1962
Forty-five lines were crossed to six testers to evaluate their general combining ability. These lines did not clearly represent a random selection of lines with respect to this character, though they had not undergone any formal selection in this respect.

GENERAL AND SPECIFIC COMBINING ABILITY IN SEVEN INBRED STRAWBERRY LINES [PDF]

open access: possibleCanadian Journal of Genetics and Cytology, 1968
Seedlings of a diallel cross of seven strawberry inbreds omitting reciprocals were fruited in matted rows. Per acre fruit yields were comparable with leading cultivars, but berry appearance and quality of the hybrids were poor. Differences in resistance to powdery mildew reflected the values of the cultivars from which the inbreds were derived. All ...

General and specific combining abilities for different economic traits in broiler chickens

Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 1975
A complete diallel cross of four broiler breeds was made to investigate whether there are breed differences in the combining abilities for the traits, body weight, weight gain and feed efficiency, measured during the growing period from 4 to 12 weeks of age. Data collected from male and female birds were analysed separately.

Relevance of Specific versus General Combining Ability in Winter Wheat

Crop Science, 2012
ABSTRACTKnowledge of quantitative genetic parameters is crucial in allocating resources for different steps of multistage selection programs. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the magnitude of variance of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects and their interaction with environments in ...
