Numerical simulation of rock breaking by PDC bit in hot dry rocks

open access: yesNatural Gas Industry B, 2019
Penetrating through hot dry rocks for geothermal resources with high geothermal gradients, high degrees of hardness and abrasivity will be extremely difficult, and a reasonable tooth distribution is a key factor to improve its rock-breaking efficiency ...

Molecular characterization of covRS mutations in M1UK Streptococcus pyogenes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) acquires covRS mutations driving a hypervirulent bacterial state, frequently associated with invasive disease‐like necrotizing fasciitis. We demonstrate that the newly emerged M1UK GAS lineage can also acquire these mutations.

Effects of Wood Species on the Energy Requirements and Size Distribution of Strands Produced by a Strander-Canter

open access: yesBioResources, 2023
The effects of wood species on the performance of the strander-canting process were studied. Logs of balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.), black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.), and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb) were processed under two ...

Development of a Laboratory-Integrated Microwave-Assisted Cutting Machine and Its Use in Carbonate Rocks

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Full-face tunnel boring machines (TBMs) can be used to excavate hard rocks, but there are still significant issues with low advance rate and high cutter wear. However, roadheaders and other mechanical excavators are unable to cut hard rocks.

From energy provision to protein synthesis: Tunnelling nanotubes as mediators of intercellular metabolic cooperation in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The cytoskeleton‐mediated transport of mitochondria via tunnelling nanotubes restores respiration, increases ATP production, rescues cells from apoptosis, activates the AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, promotes cell migration and invasiveness, contributes to cancer progression and treatment resistance.

Dose‐dependent hepatotoxicity of hydrogen peroxide in HepG2 cells and its modulation by CYP450 induction

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
NMR metabolomics revealed concentration‐dependent metabolic perturbations in HepG2 cells exposed to H2O2. Rifampicin pretreatment enhanced metabolic competence, attenuated toxin‐induced alterations and produced metabolite profiles more consistent with human liver physiology, supporting the use of CYP450‐induced HepG2 models for improved in vitro ...

Energy saving by prediction of the optimum cutting rate in stone cutting process: An industrial scale study

open access: yes, 2012
Sawing of rocks cost is controlled to a large extend by the cutting rate which is influenced by the properties of the saw and the sawn rock. Energy consumption is very important unit cost parameter, which strongly depends on cutting rate, in stone ...
