Extraction of oil from jatropha seeds using a twin-screw extruder: Feasibility study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of mechanical pressing to extract oil from jatropha seeds using a twin-screw extruder. Experiments were conducted using a co-rotating (Clextral BC 21, France) twin-screw extruder.

Structural insights into lacto‐N‐biose I recognition by a family 32 carbohydrate‐binding module from Bifidobacterium bifidum

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bifidobacterium bifidum establishes symbiosis with infants by metabolizing lacto‐N‐biose I (LNB) from human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). The extracellular multidomain enzyme LnbB drives this process, releasing LNB via its catalytic glycoside hydrolase family 20 (GH20) lacto‐N‐biosidase domain.

Optimization of Operating Parameters for Minimum Mechanical Specific Energy in Drilling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Efficiency in drilling is measured by Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE). MSE is the measure of the amount of energy input required to remove a unit volume of rock, expressed in units of energy input divided by volume removed. It can be expressed mathematically in terms of controllable parameters; Weight on Bit, Torque, Rate of Penetration, and RPM.

Ballistic Transport at Uniform Temperature [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
A paradigm for isothermal, mechanical rectification of stochastic fluctuations is introduced in this paper. The central idea is to transform energy injected by random perturbations into rigid-body rotational kinetic energy.

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

Solid Freeform Fabrication An Advanced Manufacturing Approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
Solid freeform fabrication (SFF) is the production of freeform solid objects directly from a computer model without part-specific tooling or human intervention.

Peptide‐based ligand antagonists block a Vibrio cholerae adhesin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The structure of a peptide‐binding domain of the Vibrio cholerae adhesin FrhA was solved by X‐ray crystallography, revealing how the inhibitory peptide AGYTD binds tightly at its Ca2+‐coordinated pocket. Structure‐guided design incorporating D‐amino acids enhanced binding affinity, providing a foundation for developing anti‐adhesion therapeutics ...

Optimization of parameters in laser welding of aluminum alloy 5052-H32 using beam oscillation technique for mechanical performance improvement

open access: yesInternational Journal of Lightweight Materials and Manufacture, 2022
The beam oscillation is an innovative technique in laser welding resulting in important enhancement of the weld quality. This study assesses with numerical tools this improvement by investigating the effects of laser power, welding speed and amplitude on

Disordered but rhythmic—the role of intrinsic protein disorder in eukaryotic circadian timing

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Unstructured domains known as intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are present in nearly every part of the eukaryotic core circadian oscillator. IDRs enable many diverse inter‐ and intramolecular interactions that support clock function. IDR conformations are highly tunable by post‐translational modifications and environmental conditions, which ...
