Specific fears are a common and normal experience in the life of children and adolescents. In a substantial minority of youths, the fear for a particular stimulus or situation becomes so intense and severe that it starts to interfere with daily functioning, and in these cases the diagnosis of a specific phobia is warranted.

Functional neuroimaging in specific phobia
Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging, 2012Specific phobias (SPs) are common, with lifetime prevalence estimates of 10%. Our current understanding of their pathophysiology owes much to neuroimaging studies, which enabled us to construct increasingly efficient models of the underlying neurocircuitry.

Visual avoidance in specific phobia
Behaviour Research and Therapy, 1999Cognitive models of anxiety postulate that fear and anxiety serve as programs for avoidance of threat-relevant stimuli. We hypothesized that exposure to phobia-relevant stimuli would lead to visual avoidance in specific phobics. Spider phobic, blood-injection-injury phobic, and nonphobic participants were asked to view spider, injection, and neutral ...

Specific phobia of illness in the community
General Hospital Psychiatry, 2002This study evaluated the prevalence, risk factors and morbidity associated with specific phobia of illness. Forty-three subjects reported that illness fears substantially bothered them personally or affected their medical care ...

Psychopathology of specific phobias
Psychiatry, 2004Almost everyone will claim to have a phobia of some kind. Often these fears are common, such as a fear of spiders. They can sometimes be debilitating and make daily life difficult, such as a fear of riding in a car; or they can just seem unusual or strange, such as a fear of cotton wool or buttons.

Preconscious processing bias in specific phobia
Behaviour Research and Therapy, 1997The occurrence of processing bias manifested by the modified Stroop task does not require that the subjects to be aware of the stimuli presented. Earlier studies have shown that even when stimuli are backwardly masked so conscious identification is prevented, patients suffering from Generalised Anxiety Disorders slow down colour-naming masks that are ...

Blood phobia and spider phobia: two specific phobias with different autonomic cardiac modulations
Biological Psychology, 2002Cardiac reactions to two fear-related and one control film were compared in individuals high in spider or blood/injury fear.
