Impact of spectral nudging and domain size in studies of RCM response to parameter modification [PDF]

open access: yesClimate Dynamics, 2011
The paper aims at finding an RCM configuration that facilitates studies devoted to quantifying RCM response to parameter modification. When using short integration times, the response of the time-averaged variables to RCM modification tend to be blurred by the noise originating in the lack of predictability of the instantaneous atmospheric states.

Optimal Spectral Nudging for Global Dynamic Downscaling [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Weather Review, 2017
This study analyzes a method of constructing a homogeneous, high-resolution global atmospheric hindcast. The method is the spectral nudging technique, which was applied to a state-of-the-art general circulation model (ECHAM6, T255L95). Large spatial scales of the global climate model prognostic variables were spectrally nudged toward a reanalysis ...

A spectral nudging method for the ACCESS1.3 atmospheric model [PDF]

open access: yesGeoscientific Model Development, 2014
Abstract. A convolution based method of spectral nudging of atmospheric fields is developed in the Australian Community Climate and Earth Systems Simulator (ACCESS) version 1.3 which uses the UK Met Office Unified Model version 7.3 as its atmospheric component. The use of convolutions allow flexibility in application to different atmospheric grids.

The Impact of Grid and Spectral Nudging on the Variance of the Near-Surface Wind Speed [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology, 2015
AbstractGrid and spectral nudging are effective ways of preventing drift from large-scale weather patterns in regional climate models. However, the effect of nudging on the wind speed variance is unclear. In this study, the impact of grid and spectral nudging on near-surface and upper boundary layer wind variance in the Weather Research and Forecasting

Spectral nudging in regional climate modelling: how strongly should we nudge? [PDF]

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 2012
AbstractSpectral nudging is a technique consisting in driving regional climate models (RCMs) on selected spatial scales corresponding to those produced by the driving global circulation model (GCM). This technique prevents large and unrealistic departures between the GCM driving fields and the RCM fields at the GCM spatial scales.

The impact of wave number selection and spin‐up time in spectral nudging [PDF]

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 2017
Numerous studies have been presented describing the benefits of using Nudging to constrain the evolution of a numerical model. Recently, a variation of this approach called Spectral Nudging has gained popularity for its ability to maintain the higher temporal and spatial variability of the model results, while forcing the large scales in the solution ...

Impacts of Spectral Nudging Parameters on Dynamical Downscaling in Summer over Mainland China [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2020
Spectral nudging is an important method of improving the effectiveness of dynamical downscaling in the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF). However, spectral nudging is sensitive to nudging parameters, and most related research has typically adopted the default nudging schemes. Summer is the rainy season in China. Both typhoons and heavy rains

A new dynamical downscaling approach with GCM bias corrections and spectral nudging [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research D: Atmospheres, 2015
AbstractTo improve confidence in regional projections of future climate, a new dynamical downscaling (NDD) approach with both general circulation model (GCM) bias corrections and spectral nudging is developed and assessed over North America. GCM biases are corrected by adjusting GCM climatological means and variances based on reanalysis data before the

Spectral nudging in the Tropics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Abstract. Spectral nudging allows forcing a selected part of the spectrum of a model's solution with the equivalent part in a reference dataset, such as an analysis, reanalysis or another model. This constrains the evolution in certain scales, typically the synoptic ones, while allowing the others to evolve freely. In a limited area model (LAM) setting,

A Methodology for Attributing the Role of Climate Change in Extreme Events: A Global Spectrally Nudged Storyline [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, 2020
Abstract. Extreme weather events are associated with unusual dynamical conditions, yet the signal-to-noise ratio of the dynamical aspects of climate change that are relevant to extremes appears to be small, and the nature of the change can be highly uncertain.
