Orbits of Twelve Multiple Stars

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Inner and outer orbits in 12 hierarchical stellar systems are determined using high-resolution speckle imaging, radial velocities, or both. Masses and fluxes of the components are estimated. The Hipparcos numbers of the main stars are 7111, 12912, 17895,

Microstructure Evolution of a VMnFeCoNi High‐Entropy Alloy After Synthesis, Swaging, and Annealing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The synthesis and processing (rotary swaging and annealing) of the novel VMnFeCoNi alloy is investigated, alongside the estimation of the grain size effect on hardness. Analysis of a wide grain size range of recrystallized microstructures (12–210 µm) reveals a low annealing twin density.

The Spectroscopic Binary Characteristics of the Mercury-Manganese Stars

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1976
SummaryThe 80 confirmed and suspected mercury manganese stars identified prior to 1974 and north of declination -20° have been studied from 654 high dispersion spectrograms. (2.4 - 15 Å mm-1) for velocity and degree of peculiarity. The binary frequency based on velocity variability criteria alone appears to be a normal main sequence value of about 50%,

New spectroscopic binaries among nearby stars [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2003
In the course of surveying a large number of nearby ( ≈ 50 pc or less) stars for indicators of youth, we have discovered a number of hitherto unknown spectroscopic binaries. Here we present a list of these new binaries with pertinent data. Two of these (HD 143705 and HD 89959) have been observed six times each, and their respective radial velocity ...

Tailoring Functional Properties of Ti–Ni–Cu Shape Memory Alloy Thin Films for MEMS Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A comprehensive study of critical parameters required to develop well‐performing Ti–Ni–Cu thin film shape memory alloy microactuators is provided. Materials science and device integration aspects are integrated by addressing structural and physical relationships using complementary characterization techniques as well as a practical fabrication solution

Old Dogs, New Tricks: Re-examining Photographic Spectra of Plaskett’s Star

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Photographic spectra of Plaskett’s Star (HR 2420, HD 47129, V640 Monocerotis) that were recorded at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory have been digitized with a flatbed scanner.

The Influence of Tight Binaries on Protoplanetary Disk Masses

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Binary systems are a common site of planet formation, despite the destructive effects of the binary on the disk. While surveys of planet-forming material have found diminished disk masses around binaries with medium separation (∼10–100 au), less is known

Gamma Cas Stars as Be+White Dwarf Binary Systems

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2022
The origin of the bright and hard X-ray emission flux among the γ Cas subgroup of B-emission line (Be) stars may be caused by gas accretion onto an orbiting white dwarf (WD) companion.

High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...
