Spectrum Metrics and Spectrum Efficiency: Proposed Definitions

IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility, 1977
A spectrum metric-a unit of measure of spectrum-space use-is defined and used to define a measure of spectrum efficiency as the ratio of communications output to spectrum-space input. It is shown that this efficiency measure is easier to compute than another candidate, and gives the same relative result.

Challenges and Considerations in Defining Spectrum Efficiency

Proceedings of the IEEE, 2014
Since spectrum is a precious commodity, knowing how efficiently different technologies and applications use it allows users and operators to make the best decisions on what wireless technology to deploy and in what configuration. Understanding spectrum efficiency can also assist policy makers better decide on how to most effectively allocate spectrum ...

Spectrum efficiency with correlated interferers

5th IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications, Wireless Networks - Catching the Mobile Future., 2002
A general formulation of the probability of co-channel interference (PCI), valid for macro- and micro-cellular radio systems, is presented and related to spectrum efficiency in a correlated log-normal shadowing and Rician/Rayleigh fading environment. The effects of correlation between the signals and of the Rice factors of the Rician faded desired and ...

On Cellular MIMO Spectrum Efficiency

2007 IEEE 66th Vehicular Technology Conference, 2007
To increase the transmission rate without bandwidth expansion, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique has been attracting much attention. When MIMO technique is applied to a cellular system, the MIMO channel capacity is affected by the interference from neighboring co-channel cells.

Spectrum- and energy-efficient D2DWRAN

IEEE Communications Magazine, 2014
IEEE 802.22 is the first world-wide standard for wireless regional area networks using cognitive radio technologies. Major drawbacks of these networks are limited network capacity and low energy efficiency. One potential solution for these drawbacks is device-to-device communication, which can be incorporated as D2DWRAN.

Spectrum pooling: an innovative strategy for the enhancement of spectrum efficiency

IEEE Communications Magazine, 2004
This article describes the technical challenges that have to be met when implementing the interesting new technology of spectrum pooling. This notion represents the coexistence of two mobile radio systems within the same frequency range. It enables the secondary utilization of already licensed frequency bands as aimed at by several regulatory ...

Spectrum and energy efficient cognitive relay for spectrum leasing

2012 IEEE International Conference on Communication Systems (ICCS), 2012
In this paper, we propose a spectrum and energy efficient spectrum leasing scheme based on a two-path successive relay technique. The proposed scheme aims to minimize the primary energy consumption to support a primary target rate while maximizing the secondary rate under an energy budget.

Efficient spectrum summarization using compressed spectrum scans

IEEE INFOCOM 2018 - IEEE Conference on Computer Communications Workshops (INFOCOM WKSHPS), 2018
We present AirPress, a spectrum scan compression method that leverages wavelet decomposition for lossy compression of spectrum data and allows up to 64:1 compression ratio of power spectral density traces without adversely impacting the spectrum summarization accuracy.
