Coding Anger in Fiction

open access: yesActa Universitatis Carolinae: Philologica, 2017
The paper examines the fictional representation of anger in English. The emotion is identified by its lexical indication in the reporting clause (said angrily) accompanied by the direct speech which is assumed to verbalize the emotion.

Band-pass filtering of the time sequences of spectral parameters for robust wireless speech recognition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
In this paper we address the problem of automatic speech recognition when wireless speech communication systems are involved. In this context, three main sources of distortion should be considered: acoustic environment, speech coding and transmission ...

Next‐generation proteomics improves lung cancer risk prediction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This is one of very few studies that used prediagnostic blood samples from participants of two large population‐based cohorts. We identified, evaluated, and validated an innovative protein marker model that outperformed an established risk prediction model and criteria employed by low‐dose computed tomography in lung cancer screening trials.

Gated recurrent unit predictor model-based adaptive differential pulse code modulation speech decoder

open access: yesEURASIP Journal on Audio, Speech, and Music Processing
Speech coding is a method to reduce the amount of data needs to represent speech signals by exploiting the statistical properties of the speech signal. Recently, in the speech coding process, a neural network prediction model has gained attention as the ...

A parametric prosody coding approach for Mandarin speech using a hierarchical prosodic model

open access: yesEURASIP Journal on Audio, Speech, and Music Processing, 2018
In this paper, a novel parametric prosody coding approach for Mandarin speech is proposed. It employs a hierarchical prosodic model (HPM) as a prosody-generating model in the encoder to analyze the speech prosody of the input utterance to obtain a ...

Guest editor's note [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
During speaking, the mental lexicon is accessed to select the necessary words, and to retrieve their phonological and syntactic patterns. However, the nature of real-time activation of words and phonological rules is largely unknown.

Magnified Neural Envelope Coding Predicts Deficits in Speech Perception in Noise

open access: yesJournal of Neuroscience, 2017
Verbal communication in noisy backgrounds is challenging. Understanding speech in background noise that fluctuates in intensity over time is particularly difficult for hearing-impaired listeners with a sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL).

Developing evidence‐based, cost‐effective P4 cancer medicine for driving innovation in prevention, therapeutics, patient care and reducing healthcare inequalities

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The cancer problem is increasing globally with projections up to the year 2050 showing unfavourable outcomes in terms of incidence and cancer‐related deaths. The main challenges are prevention, improved therapeutics resulting in increased cure rates and enhanced health‐related quality of life.

LDAcoop: Integrating non‐linear population dynamics into the analysis of clonogenic growth in vitro

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Limiting dilution assays (LDAs) quantify clonogenic growth by seeding serial dilutions of cells and scoring wells for colony formation. The fraction of negative wells is plotted against cells seeded and analyzed using the non‐linear modeling of LDAcoop.

Auditory Speech Perception Tests in Relation to the Coding Strategy in Cochlear Implant

open access: yesInternational Archives of Otorhinolaryngology, 2015
Introduction The objective of the evaluation of auditory perception of cochlear implant users is to determine how the acoustic signal is processed, leading to the recognition and understanding of sound.
