Comparing self‐reported race and genetic ancestry for identifying potential differentially methylated sites in endometrial cancer: insights from African ancestry proportions using machine learning models

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Integrating ancestry, differential methylation analysis, and machine learning, we identified robust epigenetic signature genes (ESGs) and Core‐ESGs in Black and White women with endometrial cancer. Core‐ESGs (namely APOBEC1 and PLEKHG5) methylation levels were significantly associated with survival, with tumors from high African ancestry (THA) showing ...

Enhancing Unsupervised Speech Recognition with Diffusion GANs [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
We enhance the vanilla adversarial training method for unsupervised Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) by a diffusion-GAN. Our model (1) injects instance noises of various intensities to the generator's output and unlabeled reference text which are sampled from pretrained phoneme language models with a length constraint, (2) asks diffusion timestep ...

A large‐scale retrospective study in metastatic breast cancer patients using circulating tumour DNA and machine learning to predict treatment outcome and progression‐free survival

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
There is an unmet need in metastatic breast cancer patients to monitor therapy response in real time. In this study, we show how a noninvasive and affordable strategy based on sequencing of plasma samples with longitudinal tracking of tumour fraction paired with a statistical model provides valuable information on treatment response in advance of the ...

Speech recognition in individuals having a clinical complaint about understanding speech during noise or not

open access: yesInternational Archives of Otorhinolaryngology, 2011
Introduction: Clinical and experimental study. Individuals with a normal hearing can be jeopardized in adverse communication situations, what negatively interferes with speech clearness.

Devising a development test of auditory perception: Problems and prospects

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Communication Disorders, 1971
It is certain that many children whose auditory perception is queried by audiologists, speech therapists, educationists and psychologists elude the diagnostic screens presently available in each of these disciplines.

It's not what you said, it's how you said it: discriminative perception of speech as a multichannel communication system [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
People convey information extremely effectively through spoken interaction using multiple channels of information transmission: the lexical channel of what is said, and the non-lexical channel of how it is said. We propose studying human perception of spoken communication as a means to better understand how information is encoded across these channels,

Landscape of BRAF transcript variants in human cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We investigate the annotation of BRAF variants, focusing on protein‐coding BRAF‐220 (formerly BRAF‐reference) and BRAF‐204 (BRAF‐X1). The IsoWorm pipeline allows us to quantify these variants in human cancer, starting from RNA‐sequencing data. BRAF‐204 is more abundant than BRAF‐220 and impacts patient survival.

Deep Implicit Distribution Alignment Networks for Cross-Corpus Speech Emotion Recognition [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
In this paper, we propose a novel deep transfer learning method called deep implicit distribution alignment networks (DIDAN) to deal with cross-corpus speech emotion recognition (SER) problem, in which the labeled training (source) and unlabeled testing (target) speech signals come from different corpora.

Crime Against History: Slavery, Race, and the 1776 Report

open access: yesNew Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT With the 2025 executive order, “Ending Radical Indoctrination in K‐12 Schooling,” the Trump administration reestablished the 1776 Commission, which produced The 1776 Report. This article argues that this report, which is an unsubtle response to The 1619 Project, reveals how White Christian Nationalists wish to mandate that a hyper‐patriotic ...
