Gender &History, EarlyView.ABSTRACT This article argues that marriage was central to historical change in the Yoruba‐speaking region of West Africa during the eighteenth century. It draws on ìtàn, a distinct oral source, to show that conjugality shaped Yoruba processes of urbanisation and political centralisation, gendered divisions of labour and social innovation and creativity.

Speech-genre characteristics of everyday omens
International Journal “Speech Genres”The paper deals with everyday omens as a special speech genre within the framework of prognostic discourse. Calendar and meteorological omens to a great extent reflect recurring objective circumstances, while everyday omens record mostly random coincidences of events.

‘From the Fields Into the Bars’: The Story of Israel's First Transgender Novel, The Cut (1977)
Gender &History, EarlyView.ABSTRACT In 1977, an Israeli transgender woman, Judy Spotheim, published an autobiographical novel entitled The Cut. It describes the emergence of a trans community in the commercial‐sex areas of Tel Aviv‐Jaffa, hoping to humanise trans women (coccinelles). This article is the first to study the novel and present a biography of Spotheim.

Goode, the Manchester Guardian’s special correspondent in Russia and the Baltic, was arrested in the Estonian capital Tallinn and briefly detained aboard a British warship. Writing Against the Machine: Computational Authorship and Historical Writing
History, EarlyView.Abstract Historians generate knowledge through the labour of composition – through the friction between interpretation and evidence that makes claims open to scrutiny and challenge. This essay argues that when composition is bypassed, that structure disappears. Generative AI raises this issue in urgent fashion.
